Hi,

I would like to request your insights on the industry standards of compensation for HR professionals in a Resource Management role. I am currently working in the Resource Management domain of an IT/Consulting organization listed on the NYSE. Specifically, I am involved in Resource Management and have a few questions for which I would greatly appreciate your observations and inputs:

1. What is the industry standard compensation for HR professionals in a Resource Management role, particularly in Indian companies and MNCs?
2. What growth opportunities can one expect in this role? Is it advisable to specialize solely in Resource Management, or would it be beneficial to diversify with experience in Recruitment, Compensation & Benefits, etc., alongside specialization in Resource Management (which option is preferable from a compensation standpoint)?
3. Given the choice, would you recommend focusing on Resource Management or the Generalist HR area?

Your insights will be instrumental in helping me make an informed decision. Have a wonderful day ahead! :)

I am not sure about the Indian context; however, in Pakistan, the role of a generalist is preferred in reference to the range of choices that open up, as well as the compensation level. As a specialist, you would tend to limit yourself to a specific area, which is limiting. In case you are eyeing the top slot in an organization, it would also be hampering your growth prospects.

Hi,

I would definitely prefer a Generalist Role as this will give me an insight into the entire gamut of HR. I just have 4 years of experience and I am working in a medium-sized company, but if I opt for a Tier 1 company, then I have to become a specialized person. In large companies, there are different departments like Learning and Development, Employee Relations, Compensation Benefits, Resource Management, etc. In those, you really need to be a specialized person.

So my suggestion would be to work in a medium-sized company for a few years. Get an idea about the entire HR Life Cycle and know the core competency and then move into a specialized area where your interest lies.

Cheers,
Pranita
