Hi Friends,

Here are the lessons we can learn from the latest movie "Iqbal"

This excellent write up is by my manager, after reading this, I couldn't hold myself to see the movie...

Serenity – Thy Name “Iqbal”

From the Inside – Out Lessons "Made in India."

- by Raman Bharadwaj

I'll not be surprised that this movie too will make

its way to management schools like "Lagan," did a few

years ago. cIn fact, I dare say this is more authentic

including the "choice of the one's who paly the game

even if it is for a movies shot."

Hat's off to Nagesh Kuknoor - the Director of this

moive.

Seeing the movie Iqbal yesterday was refreshing and

good.

Apart from being a movie it has a lot of lessons for

the up and coming, and all those who are involved with

Personal Development in whatever capacity.

According to Satyajit Ray, “A film is pictures, a film

is words, a film is movement, a film is drama, a film

is music a film is story, a film is a thousand aural

and visual details and this film has it all, just in

the right dosage. A finely composed and edited movie

about a young dumb and deaf boy from a village wanting

to wear the “Indian Cricket’s Blue Colours.”

The only stars if we should be able to recognize are

Girish Karnad and Naseeruddin Shah.

Thank God Nagesh Kuknoor, the writer and director of

the movie didn’t cast Amitabh in the movie, then I’m

sure this movies wouldn’t have had the same impact as

it has now.

I’m saying this is because the of the years of

standing in front of the camera makes Amitabh’s acting

just that little predictable. Added to that his

appearances in all and sundry commercials makes him

too “over-exposed.” But just a moment, I’m not taking

anything away from him as still the is probably the

“best attracter,” India has ever seen, and a good

actor as well.

Naseeruddin Shah might have acted in many movies

himself, but still seems fresh, even fresher than

Girish Karnad. These two character actor act oas

"Cricket Coaches."

Shreyas Tadpade, who acts as “Iqbal,” seems so

authentic when he takes the field.

For Shewata Prasad the young girl who acts as the

hero’s kid younger sister, acting seems to her as

natural as “brushing the teeth.” I'm not sure of the

names of the actor who portryed the role of the

parents of the hero of "Iqbal," but must confess all

these people played their roles absolutely superbly

and gives students of "EI" a good lesson.

I never ever lived in a village but the scenes of the

village did speak for itself. It was so natural that

you might even want to go to the village where “Iqbal”

was shot. The movies opens with the village assembled

under a tree watching a “cricket match” on TV, which

was obvious that the Indian team had won the match, as

the celebration of the village with the dance for drum

beats, bursting of fire crackers etc., and a lady

wriggling in labour pains. In fact, the lady is shown

being so engrossed in the game and the TV blaring the

opponents need just 18 runs and India needing one

wicket, and this lady praying to God just help India

get that wicket God and I’ll name my to be born child

by your name. If Kuknoor was asked how did he come up

with this pleasant idea of a movie like this he might

remark like any American Director, “Aw, I don’t know,

it just came to me.”

The world at this point of time is bereft of

characters in the game except say a Shane Warne and

the legendary Sachin the great, who knows the Indian

Cricket team, nay the selectors of the Ranji Trophy

teams all over the country may just believe there is

an “Iqbal” in one of their states villages too.

Being someone who is a student of “Personal

Development,” to me the take home lessons of “Iqbal”

are

1. You must have a dream

2. You must be passionate

3. You must be focused

4. You must be determined

5. You must work hard and concentrate

6. You must have self-belief

7. You should take help to succeed

8. You should have the support of the near

and dear ones

9. Let others lead small lives, but not you.

10. Let others argue over small things, but not you.

11. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you.

12. Let others leave their future in someone

else's hands, but not you.

13. Lifestyle is the art of discovering ways

to live uniquely.

Nagesh should be given credit for bring out a superb

lesson on SELF ESTEEM

Self Esteem is what we experience when we feel good

about ourselves and when we feel good inside. What

makes you feel good inside?

I feel you will feel good, when you feel you like what

you are doing, where you are going and feel you have

your priorities right. Feeling good therefore means

being satisfied with what you have, with what you are

doing and where you are going.

In this journey people often make the mistake of

comparing themselves with the others. Please don't

make this common mistake of comparing your

achievements to someone else or to what you believe

you should have done up to this point. You will NEVER

measure up and you will bring yourself down. This will

result in a LOW SELF ESTEEM.

What you need to feel good inside is within your

power. It is not the result but the route to

achievement. You will have high self esteem when you

have a sense of direction, satisfaction about your

choices and actions and know that you are doing your

best and doing something good.

1. Do your best and you will respect yourself for it.

If you don't you will know. You can cheat others but

not yourself.

2. Be honest and kind to others. Give yourself NO

chance to be self critical.

3. For most people doing good things brings

satisfaction and a good feeling inside. If you have

done something wrong and feel guilty about it your

self esteem will suffer. Try to help others. Spend

time with your kids, listen to others, call someone -

be nice! Your self opinion will go up and you will

feel self respect. The bonus is that others will be

grateful to you and this will also boost your self

esteem!

4. Focus your thoughts on what is right in your life

and on what you like. How can you make things better?

Don't neglect ever what you want from life. Some

sacrifice is necessary especially if you have family

but you don't have to be a martyr. Self Esteem will

only blossom when you decide to love yourself.

5. One of the benefits of Self Esteem is confidence in

yourself and knowing realistically where you are and

where you are going. But careful - don't aim too high.

Keep your sights on small improvements and planning to

get where you want to be. Each time you have a small

success you can feel happy and motivated to continue.

6. Give and be generous! Give your time and of

yourself. By doing this you will have no guilt when

you want to spend time alone or on your own projects.

if you organize yourself you CAN make time for

yourself and others. You will feel more in balance and

will feel you are living your life.

Self Esteem is what we experience when we feel good

about ourselves and when we feel good inside. What

makes you feel good inside?

Change of scene - Let us go to another aspect of the

movie

From a coaches view point with “farming” as the

background

The secret of gardening is to prepare the soil.

We look at what grows above ground but most of what a

plant is doing is out of sight. The best seed will not

grow in poorly prepared soil. And usually, with well

prepared soil, and good quality seeds, it is very

difficult to make it go wrong. The preparation before

planting makes most of the difference in success.

Timing is critical

The best seed planted too early may be killed by an

untimely frost. The best seed planted late will not

reach maturity and will not bear fruit. Farmers spend

a lot of time looking at the sky, feeling the soil,

and doing whatever is necessary to determine the right

time to plant. Timing is critical.

The plants that hold firmest are the ones that develop

their own roots.

You cannot develop strong roots by packing the soil.

Prepare the soil, put in the seed, and let it hold on

for itself. You may have to protect the plant when it

is small but the less protection you give it the

hardier it will ultimately be. The healthiest plants

are those that develop their own strong roots and

capabilities.

Excessive watering produces weakness not strength

Too much water weakens a plant as it will not need to

extend its roots deep into the earth. Similarly, too

much fertilizer will develop plants that produce all

leaves and no fruit. Ideas, and people, like plants,

thrive with a degree of challenge and struggle.

From the Coaches point of view on “Things that do

really matter..”

1.Listening enough to care and caring enough to

listen.

2.Being a dreamer but not living in a dream world.

3.Saying "It doesn't matter" and meaning it.

4.Being a positive influence in any way possible,

to as many as possible, for as long possibly one can

5.Balancing justice with mercy and fairness with

common sense.

6.Being patient and patiently enduring.

7.Earning credibility instead of demanding compliance.

8.Valuing the wisdom of discernment, the danger

of pleasure without restraint, and the joy of

victory with integrity.

9.Being worthy of trust and trusting

what's worthwhile.

10.Enjoying all things small and beautiful.

11.Words that heal. Words that help.

And words that encourage.

12.Forgiving myself for what I've done and others

for what they haven't.

13.Gaining what I desire without losing what I

should gain.

14.Maintaining the passion of purpose while

avoiding the pitfalls of making hasty decisions

with little or no discernment.

15.Enjoying life for all it holds instead of

holding out for all it has yet to become.

16.Giving praise without demands and

encouragement without expectations.

17.Hugs. Healing wounds.

And helping people realize their dreams.

18.Knowing when I can, can't and shouldn't.

19.Laughter for the sake of laughter!

20.Leading while not forgetting how to follow.

21.Honoring the honorable and avoiding the

painful errors of the disgraceful.

22.Knowing the power of commitment, the rewards

of self-discipline and the meaning of faith

in myself, God and others.

23.Smiles -- lots of them.

24.Learning as much as I can for as long as I can.

25.Standing for what's right when everything's

wrong, and saying "I'm wrong" when something's

not right.

26.Letting the music play.

27.Knowing I can and seeking help when I can't.

28.Just doing nothing at just the right time.

29.Filling my mind with all that is

excellent, truthful, full of hope, and worthy

of thinking about again.

30.Treasuring ideas for their untapped potential.

31.Caring. Giving. And having fun.

32.Refusing to believe lies about myself or

others regardless of the source -- including what

I hear from within.

33.Trusting enough to see good in people

without blindly trusting in the goodness of

all people. Success without self-absorption.

34.Showing I know the difference between keeping

the rules and listening with understanding.

Winning with dignity. Losing with grace.

And learning from both.

35.Believing in all my possibilities -- and yours too!

36.Appreciating the wisdom of maturity and the

beauty of childhood.

37.Avoiding the bondage of bitterness, the deceit

of wealth without character, and the vanity of

pride without gratefulness.

38.Loving for all one's worth because in the end

it's worth it all.

Signing off I would think that this is a "movie" worth

watching for people of all ages and with the family as

well. Children and the growing up should see this

movie.

Lastly I'll not be surprised if anyone of the "budding

cricketeers" sees this movie in say UK, West Indies,

Australia, South Africa, Kenya, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,

Pakistan, Or say a dubia or West Indies - would belive

that there is an "Express bowler called Iqbal" and

like Kapil Dev who makes a guest apperance in the end

says - only a bowler knows what it means to recognize

the hard work of another bolwer. I had heard of you

"Iqbal - the Kolipada Express" I wanted to see you.

Raman Bharadwaj
