i can tell u how i do it with my company..
we have prepared a reference report which is objective type and during the joining formality time i handover the reference report to them and ask them 2 get it filled by their respective reference person whom they have mentioned after that we call up the person who has provided the reference to thank them for their time in filling up and clarify things if required say in case if they have mentioned excellent performance ask them for the instances and also same with negative quotes.
