Dear Shashikant,
All above suggestions are very good. Follow them scrupulously. One more thing I would suggest you is - become a child in learning any new thing. A child is new to the world. He tries and knows the world. He/she is not bothered of who laughs at him/her when he/she commits a mistake. The child is also not shy when his/her ignorance is revealed. See how you picked up your own mother tongue or how any child picks up one's own mother tongue. Whatever your present age, become a child for learning English conversations.

Hi there,

First of all i would like to say that it doesn't matter from which medium have u done your study. all that matters is confidence in speaking any language.

I am also from hindi medium still i can speak a good english and i deliver my session in corporates as well, i have worked with IBM as a team laeder and these days i am teaching English Medium students and along with that i am working as a Motivational trainer as well.

As Mr. shyam Agarwal has written that for learning anything you should become a child that is absolutely right. For the first one and half year child just listen to the people that what they say, in the same way first you listen to this language then try to speak broken english. then try to read more books and finally go for writing skills.

I do run my own speaking english course as well and have prepared my own study material for the basic english learning if you are interested please mark me a mail on and will send you matter.

First of all be confident that you are a good writer of english thats means that you already know very good english but spoken is problem for you because you have already lost your confidence.

Dear Aaddiittyyaa,
Many people are facing this problem, but I feel in your case the fact is hesitation or fear of being reason to laugh on.
1. First thing you need to come out of your hesitation or fear.
2. Read stories or news that 'YOU' like. eg. If you are interested in film or celebs then read only page3. Even one news paper is enough for a week but make sure you enjoy reading thoroughly. You should not get bored with it otherwise you will loose interest.
3. While reading try to read it loudly & with expression, reason behind this is it will help you to express your self. B'coz many time we are good at reading but when it comes to express your self it sounds like you are reading book.
4. Confidence plays important role in this case. Even if you could not recollect the word you want to express, your confidence level help you to explain things differently to get through the situation.

Hi Friend,
I too was from a Hindi medium (Read and Write) till STD VI . I developed my communication by talking in English always with others, readding news paper, watching English news and watching lot of English movies with out sub titles. If you make any mistake in communication then try to find what the mistake is and correct by yourself making sentence by listerning the same by any form of media and make sure that you don't do this mistake any more in future.
Good Luck. I will be expecting post in near future that you are excelent in English.

Dear all,
Its really interesting and motivating to know about so many suggestions to improve oneself. But I feel that first thing which is most important to get rid of your EALUATION APPREHENSION i.e.to think about what others are thinking about you.Because you don't know English you are very much worried about what others will think about you and so make more mistakes and so become more concious......Be confident.
RIGHT PRACTICE MAKES A MAN PERFECT.
GOODLUCK!!!

Not a big problem. The four skills i.e reading, writting, listening and speaking
are complementary. They help in each others improvement. You have multinational
atmosphere. Get involved in it. Follow certain tips,
1.Make English as your thinking language.
2.Do not hesitate to speak in English to anyone.
3.Do not translate.Let it come automaticaly.
4.Make English as your language of communication .Talk to every one in english.
5.Read some stuff in english every day.Read loudly.
6Brush up your English grammar.
7.Mug up some idioms and phrases .It will add spices to your meals.
8. When you start speaking english properly do not stop.

Good afternoon,
All answers are important. I find the answer of ACT very learnful, sure if completed by the answer of amot 84. For me reading loudly and thinking in a foreign language were very important. I also noticed that searching something (ebay, courses, patterns, ...) you really want to get oblige you to find the right word and to understand what you read and so, you learn new words. It makes you "specialized" on one special subject. You know words that others don't use. You feel then more self-confident.
Regards.
