Hi,
I'm Ramesh, worked as a hr manager in service industries. For the past 3yrs I'm jobless as have to quit the job to look after my age old parents.
I have total 7yrs of post qualification experience in HR Generalist, but was unable to get calls reason being I’m jobless for 3yrs and I have mentioned clearly the reason for jobless.
So instead of sitting idle and now my parents were also recovered, planning for future education please suggest me which would be the better educationeven out of HR career I would pick it up and start a new career, but do please suggest me within HR and out of HR.

Dear Ramesh,
As you have mentioned, that you are jobless since 3 years, and if you are saying that you were looking after your parents in this gap, the first question which arises is, WHY 3 YEARS ?? as 3 years is a very long time and practically somewhere it is not possible that someone has to sacrifice his 3 years to take care of parents, please note this is not what I think, this is what any HR will think in first shot...as you have mentioned this clearly in your resume, I guess this is the reason you are not getting interview calls, so what I suggest you is do not mention this in your resume and first try to get interview call, then at the time of face to face interaction you may in a better position to justify your gap. As you have a rich experience of 7 years in a generalist profile, don't get it wasted in trying jobs in other domains.

Hi Ramesh,
There are times when you need to place family on top of your priority list and taking a break from work for a genuine cause has to be appreciated. It is probably not a good idea to shift your domain just because you find it difficult to get an opportunity. Ideally you should follow your passion and do what you really love - if you are passionate about HR, be assured it is only a matter of time before you find the right break. In the meanwhile, get the supporting medical documents of your parents to substantiate the reason behind the break in career, be open to relocation for the right job, read a lot and keep learning. I could agree more with what Mr. Robin Thomas has suggested - It hit the bulls-eye.

Having said this I would want you to understand another aspect and that's on wanting to go for further education.

I'm sorry but you've not state what is your present qualification.

If I may guess it's probable that you want to seek a HR Specialization which you haven't got so far.

Then let me caution you, you are back in to the same old rat-race - qualifying competitive exams, expensive course fees etc.

If that's what it is going to be then I think you should be aiming at the premier institutions like the IIM's, XLRI, TISS and then not stop with that, go on to do research, and may be a Ph.D., too. To become employable as an 'expert' this time around this would be the formula, of course with a 'big' hope that you'll get the admissions etc., which isn't one bit easy. All this would be an investment of another 5-6 years. Can you afford this in terms of time and money. So now that you know that's what you've go to aim for think about it.

If you have to get back to work, yes it's not going to be easy, you'll have to try hard, willing to be open to relocating and also on 'compensation,' people might want to offer you as less as possible trying to exploit your need for the job and also because of your personal pressure to take up a job as you need it for a comeback and more importantly for survival.

ONE STRONG ADVICE - DO NOT WITHOLD ANY INFORMATION ON YOUR C.V. AND ALWAYS BE HONEST IN YOUR THOUGHT, SPEECH AND ACTIONS.

If there is a 'gap' be it so, do not hide, conceal, or falsify.

People like me will take you purely for your honesty and sincerity. I've been very accommodative of people who speak the truth and make an honest confession and will give them the best opportunity to express themselves so that we are able to see the person completely before we make a decision to hire. On the contrary, if I catch anyone telling a lie, however skillful, smart he/she may be, that person will never get the 'nod' from me.

I narrated this to you purely because thee could be people of this nature in many other places too. I'm sure several of those experienced senior members in this community would endorse what I said.
