The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit number assigned by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) of India. The UAN was launched in 2014 to link multiple Member Identification Numbers (Member ID) assigned to a single member under a single UAN, which means it postdates the time when the said employee left the company.

Here's what you need to know:

• If the employee was a member of the EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) during their employment, they would already have a PF (Provident Fund) account number allocated. This number would have been provided by the regional EPFO office based on the location of the employer.

• However, the UAN was introduced much later, in 2014. So, the employee would not have a UAN assigned by the company at the time of their employment.

• If the employee has not already done so themselves since 2014, the employer would not be able to generate a UAN for a former employee who left the company in 1998. As per the EPFO, the UAN is to be generated by the current employer.

• If the employee has continued to work and contribute to the EPF, their current or most recent employer would have generated a UAN.

• If the employee has not worked since then or has not contributed to the EPF, they can get their UAN by activating their UAN on the EPFO website themselves.

In conclusion, while it's not possible for an employer to create a UAN for an employee who left the company before the UAN was introduced, the employee has the option to activate their UAN if they haven't done so already.
