Hi,

I work for a corporate training firm. I need some advice on how to motivate the employees to perform to their full potential. Our boss is very result-oriented, which is good, but at times he tends to push his employees. I feel this is one of the reasons why the employees are not enthusiastic to perform. As an HR professional, how can I motivate them?

Hi,

I think that apart from organizing various initiatives, you must speak to the senior concerned. You don't need to play a blame game there. Just let him know politely that you had received some informal feedback from some of the employees that they feel too pushed sometimes. Perhaps, he could adopt a strategy of allowing the team members to use their own approach to achieve targets - it doesn't matter how and when they work as long as they can hit the targets. Try to convince him by suggesting that you can use this approach on a trial basis for a month and would closely monitor the results as HR.

Additionally, I believe it is crucial to have a conducive work environment. If your boss thinks that taking the employees out might be a waste of time, consider doing something within the premises. Small gestures like a 'surprise bash for stars' (stars here are the employees of the company) with some light snacks and cold drinks could be a good idea.

Other initiatives include Appreciation cards (to be given to employees either amongst themselves or from a senior to a team member) if he believes the employee has done something truly commendable and beyond their scope of work. You can set up a public display board and pin up these cards so that others can see and read the comments and feel inspired.

Further incentives could be on-the-spot cash/voucher awards - gather all the seniors in your company and decide on one person who will receive that award - this can be done quarterly or monthly, depending on the approved budget.
