Hi, I have been working as a software engineer. I resigned around a month ago due to health issues (both physical and mental). I requested my organization to release me quickly as I am unable to concentrate properly on work. I am working slowly on tasks, so I asked for an early release to take some time off from work pressure and find peace. Despite my efforts, the tasks were not progressing as expected. I tried my best but was unable to complete them, and unfortunately, they perceived my actions as deliberate and started deducting leave without pay (LOP).

Even after submitting the doctor's certificate, the company did not believe me and insisted I work on more tasks and complete them before my departure. I expressed my concerns about their pressure affecting my health and asked them to take responsibility if any health issues arise due to their demands. Some tasks were not assigned by me, yet they claimed they were committed tasks. I pushed for my release as I was not in a condition to work effectively, but I later apologized after they expressed offense and threatened termination, mentioning they would give negative feedback during any future verifications. I agreed to complete my notice period and perform to the best of my abilities; however, they warned that if tasks were not completed or they suspected inadequate effort, they would revoke my resignation and demand further work.

Feeling helpless, I fear for my career prospects. I have received another job offer, but I am hesitant to accept it under these circumstances, unsure whether my current company will terminate my employment or increase work demands. The ongoing situation has disrupted my sleep and happiness. I wonder if I am at fault or if there is a way to navigate this issue and salvage my career.

Thank you!

I think you are unduly worrying, which is creating more and more work pressure, and you have reached near the breaking point. You want to be relieved honorably by the existing organization, but instead of helping, they are only adding more problems—that is what you feel. As outsiders to the whole issue, we are unable to really fathom the work situation. But it is not looking to be a hopeless situation; indeed, with a little more planning and effort, probably you will be able to navigate all these troubles.

First of all, don't think of alternate employment now. You need some rest and time for recuperation before you venture out. Next, try to finish the ongoing assignment and say a firm NO to any additions thereon. Try to reason out with the bosses; don't lose hope. They are trying to pressure you to work more, trying to squeeze you. You will have to reason out and express plain helplessness. Share your feelings and apprehensions with others.

You will see some light at the end of the tunnel and try to capitalize.
