Establishing a Non-Profit for Genetic Disorders

I am a person with some health problems due to a genetic disorder. Like me, there are many others in the country.

Currently, myself and others who share similar conditions, particularly those from our local area, are planning to establish a non-profit organization focused on education and raising awareness about genetic disorders. Additionally, we aim to engage in some business activities such as providing goods and services.

Employment and ESIC Benefits

I am currently employed by another company and receive benefits from the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), including access to medical facilities at an ESIC hospital. Our plan involves having a majority of employees in our organization who have health issues similar to mine. My question is whether it would be possible for us to utilize the benefits of the ESIC scheme if we are eligible for it.

ESI Scheme Overview

The ESI scheme is a self-financed comprehensive social security scheme designed to protect employees covered under the scheme against financial distress arising from sickness, disablement, or death due to employment injuries.

Coverage Threshold

The threshold for coverage of an establishment is 20 employees in Maharashtra and Chandigarh. Section 1 of the Act discusses its applicability, and Section 1(5) has extended the Act to further establishments. NGOs will fall under the provisions of ESIC, subject to the number of employees and pay scales.
