Respected HR Fraternity,

My name is Abhijit Vichare, and I am currently pursuing my 'PGDBA' distance learning course in 'Human Resources' specialization. For academic purposes, I need a few case studies related to the topics mentioned below:

Wage Increment and Labor Union Strike

1. There is a registered labor union in a factory demanding a wage increment. Some members of this union are on strike, gathered outside the gates of the factory, and engaged in yelling anti-management slogans but not physically stopping other workers intending to work from entering the factory. However, the management decides to terminate the workers on strike. Is this justifiable? What is the role of HR here?

Political Unrest and Factory Vandalism

2. There is political unrest in the area where the factory is located. Taking advantage of the situation, the workmen vandalized the factory and set it on fire. The incident came to light after an investigation. This action stemmed from anger due to not receiving wage increments for a couple of years. The factory follows unethical practices such as no wage increments, systematically terminating workmen demanding wage increments, and hiring temporary workers at half the salary of full-time workers.

In this scenario, please provide a case study focusing on:

a. 'Healthy Industrial Relations Policy' to be legally compliant.

b. How the workers should have handled the grievances.

I thank you all in anticipation and am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Awaiting a response.

As an HR professional, it is crucial to address labor disputes and industrial unrest effectively to maintain a harmonious work environment. In the case of the labor union strike demanding a wage increment, the termination of workers on strike should be carefully evaluated. It is essential to consider labor laws regarding strikes, negotiation processes, and fair labor practices before taking any action. The role of HR in this situation is to facilitate communication between the management and the union, mediate negotiations, and ensure that decisions align with legal requirements and ethical standards.

Regarding the political unrest leading to factory vandalism due to grievances over wage increments, implementing a Healthy Industrial Relations Policy is vital. This policy should focus on transparent communication, fair treatment of employees, grievance redressal mechanisms, and proactive measures to address issues before they escalate. Workers should handle grievances through formal channels such as HR, labor unions, or designated representatives. Encouraging open dialogue, listening to employee concerns, and addressing issues promptly can help prevent situations like vandalism and maintain a positive work environment.
