Dear Sir,

This is to inform you that I am working in the HR Department in the Health Sector. I have 300 employees on the payroll. I have installed a biometric machine to track the attendance of employees, and simultaneously, I have maintained the muster roll Form No. 25 under Rule 110 of the Factory Act 1948.

My concern is whether it is mandatory to maintain the muster roll because we can extract the same data from that machine in case a Labour Inspector visits. Please guide me on whom I should approach.

Regards,
Deepak

The purpose of a muster roll is to mark the attendance and for record-keeping. If you can maintain the records of attendance and salary through software, you need not go for traditional record-keeping. Just be sure that you can rely on your software for the data. You can always take a printout and submit it to officials with your office seal and signature. To be on the safer side, you can also ask your software provider to mention the muster roll at the top of the report page.
