In your previous employment, what were your responsibilities as an HR professional? Is this your first job in HR?

The Importance of the HR Department
The term HR itself speaks; this department exists to manage and assist the human element of the company. It is well known that human capital is the most important asset of any organization. Having an efficient and quality human resources department is key to the quality and success of the organization. Your effective functioning will make a difference in the organization.
Some Important Functions:
- Recruitment
- Performance Evaluations
- Compensation and Benefits
- Training and Development
As an HR person, you will have to know all the legal compliances to be adhered to by the company - PF, ESIC, Bonus, Gratuity, etc. So make it a point to refer to the bare act and rules. Have an information book with the latest changes to laws, returns to be submitted to various agencies, and phone numbers and addresses of important labor agencies with whom your company deals - e.g., have EPF/ESIC phone numbers, and the name of the contact person known.
Go step by step methodically and read the latest news about HR and those events which have a bearing on your company. It is a challenging job but can give a lot of satisfaction and can contribute to the growth of the company and employees also.
Look to maintain a friendly and professional image of your department in the eyes of all whom you render support services.

Hi Mr. Nathan,
I joined as HR manager in a jewellery firm. Here, employees' attendance and teamwork on the floor have to be focused on as per management. Please suggest any inputs or analysis survey charts you may have. Kindly share them at mana2712@gmail.com.
Thank you.

Hi Nathrao,
Thank you so much for the update. Can you please tell me clearly about the laws? If I want to know more about that, do I have to learn about law? If so, can you tell me where I can refer to those details?

I would advise reading the Bare Acts to understand them. Then seek clarifications or look for examples. Every industry is bound by many laws—make it a point to find out which laws apply, such as EPF, ESIC, Factories Act, and so on. Go to the internet and search for details. Always cross-check with other sites since not all information may be correct or up-to-date. If your company is already well-established and running, the job will be easier. The compliance system would already be in place, so adhere to it, and with time, you will learn all the statutory requirements. This site itself has a vast database of information—use the search feature of CiteHr.

Biometric Attendance System
A biometric attendance system would be appropriate.
Floor Management in a Showroom
Floor management in a showroom falls more within the realm of a sales manager/showroom manager, who would deploy staff based on the type of jewels, considering their product knowledge and sales skills. The role of HR in deploying people on the sales floor would not be within their purview. Perhaps a person could be assigned to receive customers at the gate, inquire about the type of jewelry they are interested in (gold, diamond, gems, etc.), and guide them to the appropriate counters. Based on the sales performance at each counter, the sales manager/showroom manager can decide on staff deployment.
Hiring a Retail Consultant
Consider hiring a retail consultant specializing in jewelry sales, who can assist you in:
- Scheduling staff based on individual jewelry counter footfall.
- Providing accurate footfall data to monitor customer buying behavior.
- Offering retail training to help staff optimize conversion rates from inquiries to purchases.
- Measuring, managing, and improving your staff's performance.
- Recognizing peak hours and days to maximize staff deployment during events like Diwali or Akshay Tritiya, etc.
