My brother is working at a multiplex entertainment service provider company in New Delhi. He has been serving since June 2007 to the present, but he has not been promoted to a higher position. He is a graduate and has attended numerous interviews in the HR department, but the management does not seem interested in promoting him. When the HR department inquires about my brother to the manager, the manager instructs them to ignore the matter. Interestingly, another person who joined the company at the same time as my brother has been promoted to a higher position despite not being a graduate.

What Should I Do?

Thank you.

Promotion is given based on qualifications, experience, and the ability to work smarter. If your brother possesses these qualities better than the other candidate, he should be promoted. If not, in my opinion, he should consider changing organizations. Otherwise, he will keep thinking about it.

Another option is to discuss with management to understand the reasons behind the decision. Remember, discussion is always better than argument.

In most private companies, the promotion policy is based on merit, seniority, suitability, capacity to hold the post, being a go-getter, ability to get along with people, having a dynamic personality, thorough knowledge of affairs, tactfulness, managerial capacity, leadership skills, presence of mind, and the ability to act according to the situations. Therefore, just like that, it won't happen.

Unlike government organizations, promotions in private organizations are the consequence of your performance and potential to take on higher responsibilities. However, in some organizations, there is a flat structure. When roles change, there can be an upgrade to a higher grade level. Practically, a promotion is not only a designation or title change but an upgrade in your responsibilities.

Questions to Consider for Promotion

Individuals should ask themselves the following questions:
- Am I performing as per the expectations of the organization or manager? Am I delivering the desired results?
- Am I capable of handling higher responsibilities? If yes, does the organization recognize these capabilities? Have I exhibited these capabilities in different situations?

If you have a positive answer to the above two questions, then you need to ask further questions like "How can I brand my positive image in the organization?"
