Dear Friends,

I have decided to pursue a PG in Instructional Design from Symbiosis Distance Learning. I would like to have your comments on how helpful it can be, the importance, and the value it can bring for a career in T&D. Please feel free to drop your ideas; I would really appreciate the response.

Thanks and Regards,
Manasi

Hi,

Instructional design is a very good topic. I do have an idea about it because I have taken that as my project topic. If you could provide me with guidance on how to apply it to training, it would be of great use to me.

Thank you for the query. Here is a good source on ID models to read and digest:

If you want any further help, do drop a private message giving as much info about yourself, where you are studying, where you are doing the project, etc.

Hi Manasi,

It's good to hear that you want to pursue a PG in instructional designing (ID). Well, my advice to you would be to research before you take the plunge. I say this because I was in the same quandary a few months back. If you really want to be a full-time ID, the course will be helpful. A good place to start your research would be a series of blog posts by Christy Tucker. She has been an ID for a long time.

Instructional Design Careers – Experiencing E-Learning

Another good read about whether you need a degree for an ID job is this one by Cammy Bean:

Learning Visions: Instructional Designers: Do You Have a Degree in ID?

I have been in the field for 9 years, and all the people I have worked with acquired their skills on the job.

Well, here I stop my rant. Hopefully, this helps you make your decision. And ohh, I decided not to do the PG but to do self-study. I have been quite successful at learning the theory. The practical aspects I know from my job, having done it for 9 years. Also, if you really want to attend a course, I suggest a short-term course from selected institutes. There are only a handful in India.

Prabha

Dear Prabha,

An excellent posting giving proper references to the sites. Many on this forum do not do that. Even I have missed out saying who had posted the links I have given.

Best wishes,

Sunita, we shall definitely talk regarding this. Let me go ahead with the course and complete one of the semesters. I shall probably be completing the semester by the end of September. You can definitely speak to me about it on 09860000167.
