Hi all,

I need one clarification. One candidate has resigned from his present company. However, his project manager is not accepting the resignation. The project manager is insisting that the candidate complete the knowledge transfer (KT) before they will accept the resignation, even though the candidate has already submitted it to the project manager.

My question is, can I conduct an employee verification in this situation? I have doubts because I feel the candidate may be making excuses. Additionally, when I asked for the project manager's email address or contact number, the candidate denied providing them.

Please suggest what I should do.

Sujata

Hi Sujata,

Verification about the employee at this stage, when he has already submitted his resignation, poses no problems at all. However, it can be a problem for him if he is indeed making an excuse. Once you conduct the verification, his PM will come to know about it, which may lead to him losing his job there as well. If he is not providing the contact details of his PM, there is something seriously fishy, or he may not want you to talk to his PM. I would suggest proceeding with the verification.

Cheers,
Archna

Hi Sujata,

Morning.

From the above, I presume that you have interviewed a candidate and now you are in the process of his joining at your organization. According to the candidate, the present employer is not accepting his resignation, and he is hesitating in giving his contact numbers.

In view of the above, we can derive:

1. The candidate is not much interested or is trying to negotiate the offer letter you have given, aiming to get a better pay package at his current workplace.

2. As he is not providing the contact numbers, it seems he might not have even submitted the resignation. Generally, professional companies promptly acknowledge resignations and issue relieving letters accordingly.

3. You need to wait, observe, review the CV again, and try to read between the lines. It appears the candidate is not trustworthy and seems to be hiding something, lacking transparency.

4. During the interviews, did you inquire about reference checks? If not, what was his response? This information is crucial as well.

5. At this point, you can give him a week to respond. Afterward, decide on the next steps. If the candidate fails to provide concrete feedback, it would be advisable to proceed with the second shortlisted candidate rather than causing unnecessary pressure on the HR department.

6. If the candidate is eager to resign and join your organization, you can instruct him to submit his resignation via Registered AD/Courier and retain the acknowledgment/proof of delivery. This action may prompt the present employer to expedite the relieving process.

Hope this addresses your queries.

Sushil

Madame,

In the process of recruitment, if you are not confident and sure about the candidate, forget it. However, you can go to any extent, even hire an outsider to confirm the facts.
