Dear All,
I have observed that the presentations given by the HR staff are not as impressive as the ones given by the marketing team members. Of course, the fact that this is the primary skill needed for their job counts, as they have to impress and convince the customers. But the HR staff too need to convince their customers, i.e., the employees.
So, do organizations treat both department members equally when it comes to training them in this aspect? Please put forth your suggestions on the same.

Hi Neha,
I believe your observation is something different. In fact, I think HR Presentation is more difficult as compared to Sales.
When you give a presentation to the external customer, they may ignore some points. However, when you present to the internal customer (staff), they notice and provide feedback on the spot. This feedback will showcase your real skills, and you can rectify any issues immediately.
Yes, I agree that organizations should treat both department members equally.
Thanks,
Manish Sahni

Hi Neha,
You are right to some extent. But what I personally feel is that everything depends on how good skills the presenter has. Giving a presentation is an art. If one is also very good at soft skills, things become easier for him, irrespective of which stream he belongs to.

The success of a good presentation depends on the following:
a. Knowledge about the subject.
b. Language.
c. Confidence in facing the audience.
d. Creative thinking and creativity in the presentation made.
Thus, if the person masters the above parameters, anyone can give a good presentation.

Hi, I am Nithya, a Recruitment Executive.
According to me, I say yes, the HR & Marketing departments need to be trained to convince people. HR is involved with people at work, and marketing is involved with people outside the organization. Both handle people. An HR professional and a Marketing professional must surely know the psychology of the people; this may come through experience and some learning as well.

Neha,
As is pointed out by the other members, individual presentation skills matter a lot. However, regarding treating HR and Marketing professionals equally, it depends on the following:
1. The organization's maturity in treating both departments equally
2. The individual HR person's capability to convince the organization/management that HR is dynamic and active - on par with the proactive marketing department and is not passive.

Hi,
I feel marketing professionals are more qualified and trained to present and convince external clients effectively, whereas HR professionals focus on internal employee matters across all levels. Therefore, both roles are distinct, and for companies, marketing professionals are generally more sought after than HR or administrative professionals.
In any case, please forward the presentation so we can review it.

Hi Neha,
I believe that an HR person should possess the necessary presentation skills, which are as important as those for a Marketing Manager. We sell the image and walk the talk; if we are not the best, how can we attract and retain the best? Therefore, I think that if you want to be an HR professional, you should consider taking courses on presentation skills and communication. While there is no hard and fast rule for good presentation, I believe a major component is to remain natural and present things in a way that you are comfortable with, without trying to imitate others.

This is so because we repeat the same HR policy of the company every time without any alterations and changes. Repetition becomes a little boring and not of much interest. But you can observe certain issues in the presentation are very volatile, which sometimes creates huge differences among the group.
How we make the presentation is also important, like language, punch lines, humorous, energy, voice modulation, etc. These things also create a significant impact on the audience.

Hi,
I believe that HR professionals should be more efficient in putting forward ideas because they are the ones who motivate the motivators (the marketing/sales people). If the organization is mature enough to understand that every department has its own importance and the HR department should be given due consideration, many key people can be motivated to stick with the company during crucial times.
