Hi People,
I am a BBM graduate specialized in HR from Bangalore, India, with 3 years of prior work experience in HR and CRM. I am currently working as an HR Executive for a construction company in Bahrain for 2 months and I wish to complete a Certificate in Personnel Practice from a training institute in Bahrain accredited by CIPD UK. After completion, I plan to pursue other courses offered by CIPD UK in Bahrain.
I would like to know whether these courses are beneficial for me to advance and secure a better position in an MNC. Or is it the case that only experience matters in obtaining a better job? I am not very familiar with the specific requirements of companies in Bahrain.
Awaiting your response on this!
Thanks & Regards,
Abdulla Shaik

Dear Abdullah,
The CIPD certifications are very widely accepted and acknowledged in the whole of the Middle East, especially in the GCC. CPP is a good start; you will become accustomed to these types of courses, and CPP is not the end, it's just the beginning. Moreover, I wish to advise you to please cultivate an attitude of self-development, keeping in mind personal growth and not just what your company wants. This way, you are focusing on short-term gains rather than long-term goals.
Please go through the posts via the link below where you will come across interesting Q&A concerning CIPD.

Hi Sajid,
Thank you very much for the advice. I have contacted Bridge Training Solutions, and I will get enrolled this month for CPP. Currently, I am working for a mid-size construction company in Bahrain, and there is no scope for HR in this company. There are no policies and procedures to work on; everything happens in general.
Now my question is, what does it take to get into a bigger company in the Gulf, preferably an MNC, and work on broader concepts of HR? Is it enough to have qualifications like CIPD, or is it based on work experience in the Gulf? Every time I have applied for a job, I receive feedback that I do not have work experience in the Gulf. Please advise; I am waiting for your response on this matter.

Dear Abdullah,
Let me start the Bahraini way, Kefak ante al yaoum. Shlonech? Shaqbarak? Hope you are doing fine. Apologies again for responding late.
Let me attempt to answer your queries in breakups:
- Mid-size construction company – No policies and procedures to work.
According to me, you had a very right opportunity to develop an HR Department making active each function live step by step. You could have used this opportunity to experiment with new methodologies that are being used in the present time and which you can learn through different mediums. What you need is the management support, and I am sure no management will refuse a systematic way of working with proper job roles and responsibilities.
Don’t wait for ready-made systems and procedures; otherwise, you will end up doing jobs that are routine and monotonous. First of all, please make it very clear to yourself in what area you want to develop yourself. In HR, what stream do you want to concentrate on? You have to find out your own interests and capabilities. Based on that, you can proceed further. HR is not an area where you are restricted to files and policies. This is the only department that deals with finding innovative ways and means to motivate its workforce, enhance their professional and personal lives. The department's responsibility is to provide opportunities to its workforce so they can demonstrate the best of their talent and perform well. To accomplish such important objectives where you can make a difference in people's lives, both personally and professionally, what you need is the zeal and enthusiasm to act and not wait for directions. I hope I am clear in explaining it to you.
- What it takes to get into a bigger company such as an MNC so that you can get a chance to work on broader concepts of HR.
a. Is it Qualifications such as CIPD?
Yes, among existing certifications, CIPD certifications are very much appreciated, especially in the Gulf and specifically in Bahrain.
b. Or is it work experience?
Experience is something you can get once you are taken into a company, and it is a result of the support you get from good and recognized certifications. You have to start somewhere. Unless you start, how will you gain experience? I can understand your dilemma; it's the same as the chicken-first or egg story. Most employers/recruiters look for previous Gulf experience, even if you have good certifications. But it's all up to you how you gather or put yourself in a situation where you can add to your work experience. Both have their equal importance in their place. It's a layman's question to ask which one is more important. Normally, in companies governed and owned by traditional home-run business families, you will always face such kind of problem situations. However, as times are changing and the new generation has taken the reins in hand, they have trained and developed themselves from prestigious Western universities and are nowadays understanding the underlying problems in people management and implementing newer strategies to curb the age-old traditional practices.
Abduallah, it's all about your own intelligence, negotiation, timely decision-making that will help you shape your career. As a silent observer, what I can suggest to you is that this is a field where the sky is the limit to develop and achieve.

Hi Sajid,
How have you been? Sajid, as you know, I am working as an HR executive in a construction company in Bahrain for six months. Meanwhile, I am pursuing CPP (CIPD U.K) from the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance. Today, I received a job offer from a retail company, and I am feeling conflicted about whether to accept it.
I am concerned about whether changing jobs within six months will reflect negatively on my resume. I understand that the demand for the retail sector in the GCC is higher compared to the construction sector. After reviewing the company's profile, I found it very intriguing. They operate across the GCC region and are authorized dealers of major global brands. The position they are offering me is HR and Administration Supervisor, with a higher salary than my current one.
My question is, if I take up this role as an HR Supervisor, will it be considered a step up to the next level? Should I accept this offer? What is your opinion on this potential career shift?
I await your earliest response on this matter.
Thanks & Regards,
Abdulla Shaik

Dear Shaikh,
Good to see your post. We are glad now members are seeking advice on personal decisions as well. This is very true that a 6-month job switch is not recommended nor is it appreciable. But as you said, yes, the retail sector has good scope in GCC. If you take entry as an HR Supervisor, you will indeed climb up the ladder soon. I am sure about it.
Do let me know what company it is. If you do not want to disclose it in the forum, you can write to me at sajid.rasheed@gmail.com. When it comes to Bahrain, I can suggest you the prospects in this new job once I know the company details. Bahrain is always close to my heart, habibi.
Cheers,
Sajid
