Need to understand the difference between the show cause memo and charge sheet and under what circumstances these are to be adopted ?

Charge sheet explains the charges leveled against an employee. On the other hand, a Show Cause Notice calls upon the employee to 'show cause' why disciplinary action should not be taken against them. Normally, a show cause notice provides the accused with the final opportunity to prove their innocence after undergoing the usual domestic inquiry proceedings.

There is no major difference between a show cause notice and the charge sheet. Both are meant to provide an opportunity for the employee to submit their explanation regarding the allegations. It is governed by the service conditions. If the allegations are serious in nature, one needs to proceed with a charge sheet, which entails explaining the allegations in detail accompanied by a list of documents and witnesses supporting the allegations. Subsequently, it proceeds to an inquiry if the employee denies the charges.

A chargesheet is the term used in criminal proceedings. For departmental actions, it would be more appropriate to use the term 'charge memo,' especially in the current employee-friendly scenario.
