I agree - another thing to add: phone interviews are priceless when recruiting for remote locations. I usually always prefer the face-to-face interview, but phone interviews are advantageous - more so than in person, especially for filling positions in which the employee is primarily on the phones, for example, call center/customer service jobs.
Even in times when I could have done an in-person interview, I chose to conduct the interview over the phone to get a sense of what the candidate would be like if they were selected and actually in the role.
