We have an employee whose spouse underwent brain surgery, fell into a coma, and then passed away. The employee has a 2.5-year-old child who, both during the day and at night, searches for their mother and cries. As a result, the employee has been on leave without pay for the past month. As an HR professional, what would be the next steps for the future?

Hi, On humanitarian grounds, provide some time for the employee to come out of this crisis. Maybe after some time, when the employee is stable, find out whether they will be able to continue employment or not. If a work-from-home option is available, you may offer that as well. Any hasty move like termination would disturb the employee more.
