Respected Seniors,

We have hired ITI Electrician freshers for our Project Department. My question is, what should be the training period and probationary period for them legally? Additionally, after the completion of their training period, how much should their salary be revised by, according to the rules? Please guide me.

Dear Neha,

The training period and the probation period for a freshly passed ITI Electrician are decisions that have to be made specifically by the company. There cannot be a generalization. Nevertheless, you may consider keeping six months as the training period and six months as the probation period.

Whether during training or probation, the Electrician becomes an employee right from the first day of employment, and the company has to pay the minimum wages to the employee. The wages must be increased as and when the state government increases them. As long as you comply with the Minimum Wages Act of your state, everything is fine.

Upon completion of the training period, the percentage by which to increase the salary should be decided by the company's administration. Such decisions are guided by the industrial belt to which your company belongs. For example, the city of Bengaluru has industrial belts at Peenya, Hosakote, Kengeri, etc. However, there may be slight payment differences in each belt. In your case, Chakan could differ from Lonikand.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
