Hi Amit, I am working in a small software company in Mumbai. The company pays salary by self cheque/cash. I am trying to change my job, but most of the companies are asking for a bank statement or Form 16, which I don't have. I only have a payslip.

Yesterday, I received calls from TCS and Mphasis, and they mentioned that without a bank statement/Form 16, they will not proceed with my CV. I am concerned whether not having these documents will hinder my chances of securing a good job in the software industry.

Please help me.

Thank you, Amit

Navigating Job Applications Without Bank Statements or Form 16

Big companies often look for staff with relevant experience. Sometimes, people in smaller companies do not have the qualifications required by bigger companies. One effective approach is to request a practical demonstration of your skills in the particular area you have applied for. Show them your payslip and try to explain to HR the practical problems you are facing in your job search. The insistence on Form 16 and bank statements is part of the internal processes of companies, and no one can really ask them to overlook these basic procedures. If I were in your place, I would request them to conduct a skill demonstration test on the software.

Hi Amit,

To join a company, Form 16 or Bank Statement are not required. Form 16 is necessary only when there is a Tax Bracket, and that too if your CTC is equivalent to or more than your previous employer. Bank Statements are personal and do not need to be provided to companies. However, a Pay Slip is mandatory.

Thank you.

You can request your present employer for Form 16. If they do not agree, you can tell them you require it for a loan or at least get the CTC breakup. Also, take a copy of a self-cheque whenever it is issued to you and preserve it. There are many companies in India that pay salaries in cash. However, big companies always ask for these things to ensure that the employment claimed is not fake.
