I am new to this site. I have over five years of experience in Customer Service (CSR & Team Lead) and have completed an MBA in HR. My problem is that I want to continue my career in HR. So, I have left my job and started applying for Assistant HR positions.

Recently, I got a job as an HR in a small startup IT company, which consists of 9-10 members, including me. Now, I'm not able to understand what exactly my job role is here. As I completed my MBA through distance mode, I don't have any concepts in my mind, and here there is no one to guide me in my duties. My boss expects wonders to be made in his company. As a team lead, I used to conduct final round interviews, schedule interviews, conduct activities, and take care of employee relations and attrition.

Request for Guidance

I request you all to suggest what I should do in this regard. Should I join some HR training courses? Which area of HR could be good for me? What courses can I take for this? I am eagerly looking for all of your suggestions and guidance.

Regards.

I would like to say that you should first start by interacting with employees to understand their interests in the job. After engaging with employees, you will determine the next steps to take. Note down the necessary changes required to enhance organization and employee satisfaction, and implement them immediately after obtaining approval from your boss. Conduct activities every two months and provide gift vouchers to employees. By doing this, you will observe a significant decrease in attrition rates. Monitor employees daily, visit their respective places once or twice to establish control. After 2 or 3 months, you will notice numerous positive changes, and your boss will appreciate your efforts. Eventually, he will gradually share his thoughts on what should be done next.

Welcome to the ciehr community! I can understand the whole scenario as I have gone through the same situation. I am the only HR person in my organization, and I am trying to handle all the responsibilities of HR to the best of my abilities. So, I would advise you to take initiatives and seek approval from your boss to start setting up the HR department in your organization.

Implementing HR Policies

If you are planning to implement some policies, try to understand the implications they may have. Consider the benefits for the organization and the employees. Also, discuss the new policies that need to be implemented with senior managers before implementing them throughout the organization, along with your manager. You need to help them understand the benefits of these policies.

Employee Engagement Activities

You can also start some employee engagement activities to boost employee confidence that you are there for them. Communicate with the staff about what you are doing for them and their well-being. This will show them that your actions are not just because management instructed you but also because there are hidden benefits for the employees. Remember, on ciehr, you can find HR-related information to learn from daily, categorized by topics. I wish you good luck.

First of all, thanks to Yogendra & Supriya. Now, I'm doing the same job, interacting with employees and trying to understand their challenges, but no one has mentioned any problems except for the six-day working environment. Can you guide me on which policies I should implement for six employees?

A week ago, I scheduled interviews and screened a few candidates, but my boss asked to put the interviews on hold. I'm feeling frustrated sitting idly every day.
