My friend has the following job history:
• He worked in a non-IT industry for 3 years at a company. To transition into the IT field, he falsely claimed 3 years of experience at Company A while undergoing relevant training.
• He secured a job at Company B by presenting fake experience certificates from Company A and worked there for 1 year. (Most verifications did not occur or were cleared).
• Now, he is looking to apply to a new company, Company C. When applying to Company C, he no longer wishes to present fake experience. Is this feasible? He intends to showcase his genuine non-IT experience from the first 3 years and the authentic experience from working at Company B. Could this pose a problem in the future?

Well, go for the safe side by showing only the original certificates if you find yourself eligible with them for the profile. Do not worry; even if you do not have extensive experience but have developed skills, you still have a chance to get selected without any further risk.
Suppose you get selected based on your skills and fake documents, and you join the company. Later, during verification, if they discover that your certificates are fake, you will be terminated immediately. At that moment, the company will not even consider your skill sets.

Fake experience certificates have a nasty way of emerging at times when you least expect them, or you may even have forgotten about them. Fundamentally, it is incorrect and wrong to build the foundation of your career with sand!
Given the situation you are in now, I would suggest you go ahead and submit the 3 years of non-IT experience and the 1 year of IT experience, both of which are genuine. Hope for the best that Company C does not seek details of your experience from Company B because if it does, then you will be exposed.
Also, please keep in mind that there cannot be a guarantee that this will not create a problem in the future. There are several instances of very senior people getting caught with resume frauds and having to resign. Some well-known examples are:
- David Edmondson, CEO of Radio Shack
- Marilee Jones, Dean of Admissions at MIT
- Ronald Zarella, CEO of Bausch and Lomb
- Kenneth Lonchar, CFO of Veritas

Addressing Unethical Practices in Forum Queries
It has become a routine for people to adopt unethical means first and then ask for "advice" in this forum to come out of it! This only shows the moral degradation of society, where people think nothing about adopting unethical means and consider such behavior as normal. I feel this forum should have a policy not to encourage such queries and put an end to this menace. It would be our humble contribution to uphold ethics in public and personal life.

I understand, and I do not support the fake menace. My friend wants to come out of it and just show the real one-year experience of working in Company B. The pay will be less in terms of his age, but he is happy with it.

There is no hard and fast rule that is followed across the board. Requirements for background verification vary from company to company and are also dependent on company policy. Whether Company C verifies details of experience from Company B will depend upon several factors like:
(i) the nature of the job (for sensitive or complex jobs, many more details are sought than just a confirmation of tenure served),
(ii) any small discrepancy that may raise suspicions could trigger a further and deeper check,
(iii) the past experience of Company C with respect to background checks that they have conducted vis-a-vis the outcome, and finally
(iv) in a small sample of cases, more details are sought - this is like a random sampling.
