Implementing a Performance Management System in a Start-Up
I am an HR professional in a start-up IT product-based organization, and I am planning to implement a Performance Management System (PMS) in the company. I am confused about the following points, and I would appreciate your suggestions:
- When should appraisals take place? Our company is small, so I am considering starting appraisals for all employees simultaneously, for example, every year in January.
- What type of questions should employees fill out for the appraisal process? Please provide a sample.
- How can we incorporate ratings into the appraisals? What is the standard rating process to follow for appraisals?
Please correct me or provide suggestions if my query is unclear.
Thank you,
MSR

You can start the appraisals in January. It's entirely up to you. However, the hikes are generally offered within the financial year. Hence, you might need to automate it from April and pay for the last three months with the new salary package.
Appraisal Forms
There are two different forms that employees need to fill out. The first one is about self-appraisal, and the second one is about the reporting manager's feedback.
You can allocate marks to each question and then calculate the sum total to find an average.
Rating System
You have to allocate a range of marks, such as 0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, and 80-100, for each rating. There are generally 5 ratings, with 1 being the lowest.
Since this is the first time, please avoid using the bell curve. Only include it when your budget needs validation on the hikes offered.
There are too many forms uploaded in this community. They can be your frame of reference when you design one. Please share with us more about your form so that we can suggest and help you make it better.
