Dear HR professionals, could you please advise on my case? I completed my degree in 2005 and have been working in the IT industry continuously for 5 years. Prior to my current organization, I was running my own business. Now, I am looking to progress in my career with new technology aspirations. How should I address the gap from running my own business to joining my current organization and my year of degree completion? Some have suggested presenting it as teaching experience, but I prefer not to falsify my experience. Will my profile still qualify with this gap in experience? I am eager to receive your valuable advice and guidance.

Considering your situation, it's essential to be transparent about your career journey while highlighting the valuable skills gained from running your own business. Here's a practical approach to address the career gap and degree completion year gap:

1. Honesty and Transparency: During interviews or discussions, explain the reasons for transitioning from entrepreneurship to the IT industry. Emphasize the entrepreneurial skills acquired that are relevant to your current career goals.

2. Skill Transferability: Showcase how the skills acquired during your business venture, such as leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving, are applicable to your role in the IT industry. This demonstrates your adaptability and diverse skill set.

3. Professional Development: Highlight any certifications, courses, or projects you undertook during the gap period to stay updated with technological advancements. This shows your commitment to continuous learning.

4. Networking and Recommendations: Leverage your professional network for referrals or recommendations that can attest to your capabilities and work ethic, bridging the gap between your business venture and current employment.

5. Resume and LinkedIn Profile: Tailor your resume to focus on achievements and skills rather than chronology. Update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your career progression accurately.

By framing your experience positively and demonstrating the relevance of your entrepreneurial background to your current aspirations, you can effectively address the career gap and enhance your profile for new opportunities.
