Hi All,
In my company, there is an employee who has taken many leaves during his probation period - 8 leaves in 6 months of the probation period. Besides, he is always on personal calls and chats. Please let me know the conditions to extend his probation period. Can we extend the probation period in such cases? His performance is at an average level. On what basis is the probation period extended? What points are taken into consideration during such cases?

Your concern is very valid. My suggestion is to never extend an employee's probation unless they are a below-average performer. In your case, you mentioned that he is an average performer. If you extend his probation in this case, it will negatively affect his mindset, and his performance may decline further. If the person is on calls and chats, that is acceptable. You may want a uniform IT policy implemented across the company to deny access to chats, while calls should be permitted.
As long as he does not have an attitude problem (of course, without being instigated), things are fine. Some level of freedom has to be given to employees for them to perform better.
