Hi, I need a few inputs pertaining to Ph.D. and certification. I am an MBA in Human Resources with 4 years of experience in the HR field. Recently, I appeared for a Ph.D. entrance test and qualified. This is a part-time program, and I am a bit confused about whether pursuing a Ph.D. in HR would be a better option or getting certified from SHRM, CLC, or any other reputed institution. I would appreciate your kind inputs.

in the long run, Phd would be a good investment. there is a dearth of highly qualified people in HR. in the short run, aquire skill based certifications. does SHRM run such courses ?

Dear Murtuza It all depends upon what you want to do in the long-term. If you want to get into academia then PhD would be very useful. But if you want to work in the industry then not so useful.

Congratulations, Mr. Murtuza. I also want to qualify for this exam as I aim to pursue a career in academia in the future. Please guide me on the preparations you made to clear the test and recommend some books. I would appreciate it if you could share your experience.

Thank you, Ruby. To enroll in a Ph.D. program, you have numerous options with universities offering full-time or part-time programs, such as state universities, ICFAI, AIMA, etc. May I ask which state you belong to?

Each degree or certification will add definite value to your resume. Identify what you wish to grow as. Doctoral programs are in-depth, hence offering credibility in the long term, whereas certifications are for specific roles. They help you qualify for them, such as an HR Business Partner, globally. The same stands for MDP programs, which are focused on areas that the organization needs.
Please plan each step towards the direction you wish to grow. Doctoral programs are the ultimate ones. They give you the highest level of exposure to every issue. The duration builds on your experience along with your job. It further allows you to work towards your goals in the educational sector. This may not be lucrative but essential to build on your knowledge.
