Understanding Human Resource Management (HRM)

Human Resource (HR) is not just HR; it is actually Human Resource Management (HRM), which is responsible for how people are treated in organizations. An effective management policy of the people at work is crucial. HRM is responsible for bringing people into the organization, helping them perform their work, compensating them for their labors, and solving problems that arise.

There are seven management functions of a human resources (HR) department that will be specifically addressed: staffing, performance appraisals, compensation and benefits, training and development, employee and labor relations, safety and health, and human resource research.

HRM examines the various policies and programs to make people at work more productive and effective to the best satisfaction of the management. Human Resource Management consists of numerous activities including:

- Human Resource Planning
- Identification of Needs for Positioning
- Formulation of the Policy for Recruitment & Selection
- Deciding the Rules and Regulations for Recruitment, Selection, Qualifications to be possessed for each and every assignment conforming to the policy of the management and to realize the aims and objectives/goals
- Job Analysis
- Motivation and Orientation
- Training & Development
- Rationalization of Employees
- Promotions and Transfers
- Performance Appraisal – Performance Management
- Career Development
- Employees Welfare – Compensation – Welfare Measures – Health & Group Insurance

Human is the main resource of any organization, and HR is about managing people across all different areas within an organization. It is the most important department of any organization.

The Role of HR

The role of HR is to ensure both employees (in terms of job satisfaction and career growth) and the organization are profitable (in terms of productivity).

Key Functions of HR

The key functions of HR include recruitment, payroll, motivation, training and development, performance appraisal, grievance handling, promotions, transfer, succession planning, and manpower planning.

In HR, technology assists in all the above-mentioned processes. With the help of technology, HR leads to cost, energy, and time savings and increases motivation to work.

Understanding HR Functions

My understanding of HR in any organization revolves around managing three major functions for the company's employees as follows:

• Talent Acquisition (Hiring related)
• Talent Management (Employee Management, Engagement, Events, Appraisals, Promotions, Leave Management, Payroll, etc.)
• Talent Development (Training & Organization Development, Learning & Development Initiatives)

All the modern roles, responsibilities, developments, and trends are centered around these three categories.
