Hi Everybody,

The SA8000 Standard is an auditable certification standard based on international workplace norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

I would request all of you to visit the website of Social Accountability International from where you can read resources at length on concerned topics.

The SA 8000 standard is available for free downloading as a PDF format (8 pages only).

Health and Safety: Provide a safe and healthy work environment; take steps to prevent injuries; regular health and safety worker training; a system to detect threats to health and safety; access to bathrooms and potable water.

Freedom of Association and Right to Collective Bargaining: Respect the right to form and join trade unions and bargain collectively; where the law prohibits these freedoms, facilitate parallel means of association and bargaining.

Thanks for sharing this new information.

Anchal,

Mr. Gavaskar has given an excellent response in entirety. Ask yourself a question: if your organization exploits employees, what difference does it make to employee families, customers, government, society, etc.? Several BPOs, hospitality/tourism sectors, especially companies where worker exploitation is rampant, have gone in for the same. ITC Chirala plant was one of the pioneers.

Hi!

I'm Kumanan. I'm working in a Garment manufacturing company which is certified with SA8000:2001. Due to this certification, my company's value and standard have been elevated to a certain level. When a buyer visits my company, the certification reduces the intensity of auditing. This means that as a certified unit, we must meet minimum SA standards, which usually align with the buyer's expectations on employment practices and Code of Conduct. Having this certification implies that there are no malpractices against labor, and the organization follows a socially responsible approach. Therefore, this certification is not just for namesake; it enhances the quality of work life and elevates the organizational standards.

Thanks and Regards,
Kumanan A
