Biometric attendance avoids "Buddy punching." But is it hassle-free? Are employee identification a challenge in Indian work conditions?
I have received the following views from the following company staff:
1) Bearings Co - Chaos! Around 5% of employees were not getting identified by the system.
2) French MNC in services - CEO's finger was not identified frequently. They reverted to RFID.
3) Chemical Industry - Workmen scratched the biometric reader, leading to frequent system failures.
4) Leading security agency - Biometric device maintenance was a nightmare.

Electronic Attendance System is adopted for reducing the daily strength calculation, staff-wise attendance details extraction, and monthly salary/wages calculation. Furthermore, if we maintain the same on the main server, then we can use it for calculating the final settlement during resignation, termination, or retirement.
However, there are drawbacks to consider:
1. Swipe card security can be compromised if someone manages to swipe it by influencing the admin staff responsible for the attendance system.
2. The fingerprint recognition may fail if an employee has a cut on their finger or if there is grease or oil present.
3. Consider opting for a face recognition attendance system, which recognizes individuals based on nose, eye, and forehead shape. It does not factor in any facial hair, like mustache or beard.
In the future, almost all companies, factories, and organizations are likely to have their automated attendance systems.

Small-scale organizations don't go for this as they will have to invest in it and will also need someone to operate, take care of operations, and handle other aspects of it. This indirectly increases the cost. Therefore, they prefer to keep it aside and opt for the manual or traditional way of attendance and wage processing.
