Hi Friends,

Can anyone shed some light on Skill Matrix and Competency Mapping? How is it done, and what are its utilities, etc.?

Please, it is urgent.

Hi Rajeev,

As far as your question is concerned, there is a vast difference between Competency Mapping and Skill Matrix. Let me guide you based on my knowledge of the two.

Competency Mapping:

1) Competency Mapping is actually done for Management Staff.

2) Competency Mapping is based on KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes).

3) The other factors for which Competencies Mapping is based on are:

- Work Ethics

- Values

- Communication ability

4) Competency Mapping is done by defining the JDs and the skills required for those JDs.

5) When the rating of the superior does not match with the actual rating, that employee (whose competencies are mapped) goes for training.

Skills Matrix:

1) Skill Matrix is usually done for the operators' level.

2) It is done by comparing the machine utility and then the operator's capabilities.

3) If there is a multi-machine operation, the capabilities of the two machines are combined and then matched with the capabilities of the operator.

4) But in order to match the competencies of the operator with the machines, we have to first extract the competencies of the operator, list down the cycle time for each machine, and then proceed with the above activity by the above procedure.

I hope I have cleared your queries.

Dear Ankit,

I hope this message finds you well. Would it be possible for you to share some formats of a skill matrix with me? I would greatly appreciate it.

Warm regards,

Hi Rajeev,

As far as your question is concerned, there is a vast difference between Competency Mapping and Skill Matrix. Let me provide some insights based on my knowledge of the two.

Competency Mapping:
1. Competency Mapping is typically conducted for Management Staff.
2. It is based on KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes).
3. Other factors considered in Competency Mapping include:
- Work Ethics
- Values
- Communication ability
4. Competency Mapping involves defining Job Descriptions (JDs) and the necessary skills.
5. If there is a discrepancy between the superior's rating and the actual rating, the employee's competencies are evaluated for training.

Skill Matrix:
1. Skill Matrix is commonly implemented for the operator level.
2. It involves comparing machine utility with the operator's capabilities.
3. For multi-machine operations, the capabilities of the machines are assessed and matched with the operator's capabilities.
4. To align the operator's competencies with the machines, their competencies are identified first. Subsequently, the cycle time for each machine is listed, and the matching process follows.

I trust this clarifies your queries.

Best regards,
Ankit

Understanding Skill Matrix and Competency Mapping

Skill Matrix is skill-based. See the definition for Skill: the capability of doing things with the training undergone.

Competence Mapping is competency-based. See the definition for Competency: the capability of doing things with the knowledge.
