Worried About a Shoplifting Accusation: Could It Impact My Career and Background Checks?

viv-uno
Hi, I went to a supermarket two weeks ago. I had some items bought earlier from the same store in my bag. At the exit, they told me, "It is not allowed... show the bill..." I didn't have it as I had thrown it away long ago. Moreover, my bag's zipper was damaged and kept coming undone, so I had to zip it constantly. I was taking items similar to what I had already bought, so even if CCTV footage was reviewed, no one would believe me, but I digress.

They started making a huge fuss, and I got terrified. I didn't know the local language either. I didn't have anything to prove I bought it. The manager asked me to write a letter stating that I tried to take it. I wrote it because I thought he would let me go (my stupidity), but then he called the police.

The police officer came, gave a copy of the letter, and took my driving license copy. The officer took me outside, asked for my office ID, and took a picture of it on his phone. He told me he would get a warrant and then release me or something like that. On the way to the station, he asked if I had any money. I just had some 10 rupee notes. He asked me to get two coffees. He told me he would file a petty case. I started losing my mind and cried a bit.

After some time, he said, "Warning... do not repeat," and then let me go. He still has that letter, my driving license copy, and my office ID picture. I'm worried if there will be any problems with that. I have checked the online portal for FIR and arrested persons, but nothing is there in my name. I've been working in an IT company for three years. Will there be any record, case, or complaint against me? Will it affect my career, background check, or any other future verification? Please guide me. Thank you.

Hi,

You have learned your lesson. Next time, take a picture of the bill on your mobile or remember the date and time you visited that supermarket and ask for a duplicate bill. Alternatively, do not carry previously bought items in your bag. Referring to your post, it seems like the police have given you a warning. So, for now, it appears that it will not affect your future.

Dear member,

Since the FIR has not been officially registered, there will be no records in the police registry. Therefore, there is no need to worry about whether your records are held by the police.

Thanks,

The facts posted suggest that no FIR has been lodged. There is nothing to worry. However, the version you have attempted to post is less than convincing. This should really be a matter of concern for you. The starting block for any improvement is in being honest with oneself!
