Is Switching to an HR Generalist Role a Good Move with My 12 Years of Varied Experience?

anusha-das
Hello All, I am based in Mumbai. I started my career with a reputed manufacturer-exporter company in the HR-Admin Department where my role included:

- Posting job openings on portals as per approved requests received from the HR Head
- Assisting the HR Manager with interview schedules, coordinating with candidates, and managing the related paperwork
- Maintaining attendance muster
- Completing paperwork related to joining formalities such as form filling for new employees, printing, and handing over offer/appointment letters, etc.

After 2 years of working in HR, I was shifted to the Export Marketing Department as back-office support. Here, I gradually learned and grew in my career. I left that company in 2017 from the Export Marketing Department and joined my current company in the Marketing Department (a small company with 180-200 employees). For the past 1.2 years, I have been handling all HR-related activities in this company.

Career Transition to HR Generalist

My question is, can I pursue a career as an HR Generalist with 2+ years of experience in handling HR activities? With a total experience of 12 years, is a career switch a viable option? Will transitioning to HR bring me decent job offers, or will my varied work profile be a hindrance?

I would appreciate your advice. Thank you in advance for your valuable time and suggestions.

Dear friend, you have alternated your career between export marketing and HR. Therefore, the question is not about the switch but career growth. Since not many of us know much about the export industry, nothing substantive can be said as such.

In general terms, export marketing has better career opportunities than HR. Of course, this is a layman's opinion. However, there is nothing wrong with continuing in HR, provided you feel that your current company is good and can provide you with career opportunities. But once you have decided to remain in HR, then I recommend you stay there. After 12 years of service, you cannot have a one-foot-here-and-one-foot-there situation ("चरण-दोन" in Marathi).

Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar
