How Can I Ask My New Employer Not to Contact My Previous Company for Verification?

Please guide me on how to write an email to a new company regarding not disclosing my employment with my previous company. The new company's offer letter states that they will contact my previous employer for verification. However, if I inform them via email to refrain from contacting my previous employer, they will comply. Kindly advise on how to draft this email.

Dear Jasleen, When an employee joins the company, it is customary for the new employer to approach the employee's previous company or companies to obtain feedback about him or her. This is called Background Verification. Now, you wish to prevent the new company from contacting the previous company. But why? Why don't you want your company to conduct the background verification process? Writing an email to HR is one thing, but that email should also provide a credible reason. Therefore, on what grounds do you wish to write the email? Please explain.

Dear Jasleen, the purpose of background verification is to verify the veracity of the claims made in the job application. Companies verify academic certificates as well as at least the last two jobs that the applicant held. Therefore, they will not verify the reasons for the exit. Their primary concern is to check whether the separation from the company had any negative connotations. Therefore, regardless of the reason, I do not think it will have any bearing on the background verification.

If the offer letter mentions that they will contact your previous company for verification, there is no issue since you have already left the job. You can simply explain that your personal reasons or problems have been resolved, and you have found a good opportunity, which is why you joined. It's better to be honest rather than hide the truth. Importantly, once you leave a company, the previous employer has no right to interfere, so there is no need to worry if they contact them for background verification.

You should now email them to confirm that you are currently employed in your new position, stating that they requested you to send this email. This will inform them that you are working as (designation).

Telling your current employer not to check with the previous employer about your employment will make the whole matter look very suspicious. People leave jobs, and no company can really stop it. If you have left your previous company on good terms, it does not matter to them whether you join some other company or not. It is advisable to let your background verification be done properly.
