Transitioning from Counselor to HR Generalist: How Can I Make This Career Shift?

prinks
I am Priyanka. I have completed my MBA in HR from JSPM (Pune University) and graduated in 2010. After my MBA, I started working as a Counselor and have 2 years of work experience in this field. Now, I want to transition my profile to an HR Generalist role.

Transitioning to an HR Generalist Role

Could you please suggest how I should go about changing my job and whether my experience will count? Also, can you recommend some books on HR Generalist topics that I can study to help me prepare for interviews? Please provide advice on how to enter the HR profession.

Thank you.

I hope you haven't taken a wrong step by pursuing a career as a counselor. Nevertheless, you should consider transitioning into a Core HR profile. Do you have any knowledge of admin jobs? It's possible that you have also performed administrative duties while working as a counselor.

If you have experience in administration, you could explore opportunities in admin roles. Gradually, you can transition into an HR role. Keep expanding your knowledge of HR duties and functions. I recommend CiteHR as an excellent resource where you can find information to address your queries. There are many experienced professionals who can help you solve your doubts and answer your questions.

Keep persevering and learning new things.

All the best! 

For an HR Generalist profile, you must have a strong knowledge of HR and its functions, which you can acquire through work experience and learning. You mentioned currently working in a Counselor role and seeking a career change to transition into a Core HR/Generalist profile. To achieve this transition, you need to enhance your understanding of HR functions.
