Are Senior Executives Like VPs and CTOs Eligible for Comp Time Off in IT? Seeking Insights!

Please let me know if Vice Presidents, CTO, COO, and other senior management employees are eligible for comp time off in the organization. What is the standard IT industry practice regarding this? I kindly request all of you to reply as soon as possible.

Dear Anuradha,

I am sure your Vice Presidents, CTO, COO, and other senior management employees might not actually be spending regular hours in the office (not that they are not working), but it's part of the job. They come late and leave early, and vice versa. Them availing comp offs, according to me, is cheap. They should grow up.

Though it depends entirely on the company policy to administer benefits, Business Managers and Account Leaders are not eligible for comp-off or overtime. They ideally work towards business targets and receive performance pay/profit sharing based on the targets, bonuses, bulk pay, incentives, ESOP, and other benefits that are not available to other employees.

Senior Management, Operations Management Team, CFO, and HR Team (trainee to HR Manager/Head) level individuals are not recommended to avail the comp-off policy. In the case of the HR team - it's a "big no" according to me as I am working as a Manager HR in an IT company.

Even I, as an engineer, don't get compensatory time off or overtime. At higher positions, we have to work according to the company's objectives, so no compensatory time off is available to us.

Comp. Off query is specifically for a very senior position. As someone has already suggested, it is very cheap on their part in case they are asking for Comp. Offs.

Going by current trends and practices in all industries, Officers, Engineers, Managers, and even Management Trainees do not get Comp. Offs.

In the current scenario, only the bargainable class of employees who are unionized and have the protection of the law enjoy Comp. Offs.

I have a little reservation about the use of the words "not illegible" by you. I hope by mentioning "illegible," you do not mean "unreadable, indecipherable, scrawled, scribbled, spidery, obscured, impossible to read, hard to decipher," etc. What I understand you want to convey is "ineligible."

I do not agree with using "ineligible" either. The Top Management is suitably compensated by way of paid family trips to famous tourist destinations in India and abroad, conveniently disguised as attending a seminar or a minor assignment.

These weekly rest, holiday, and compensatory offs are included in the Acts and Rules primarily to provide rest for the illiterate or minimally qualified workforce, where the privileges of lower-level individuals may be at risk of infringement. At higher levels, government intervention is unnecessary as individuals can fulfill their requirements as they wish. Therefore, the issue of weekly off and compensatory offs does not arise at all.

Compensatory offs are normally extended to some people in the lower rung of the ladder. Managers are required to come to the office whenever management requires them to do so. That is why they are posted in that rank. If they want facilities like overtime, compensatory time off, etc., to be extended to them as we normally do for workmen, they would merely be designated as managers but, in reality, they would be acting or behaving as workmen (probably they could even join a labor union too).
