Dear Mr. Rajagopal,
Greetings. Let me give you some useful tips for public speaking.
Preparation for Public Speaking
In one press meet, Churchill was asked about preparation for public speaking. He mentioned that for a 3-hour speech, he takes 30 minutes for preparation. Similarly, for a 3-minute speech, he spends at least 3 hours preparing. He likened this process to making a movie, where the longer speech is like a full feature film with different elements like comedy, action, and romance. On the other hand, a 3-minute speech is akin to a short advertisement that needs to quickly capture the audience's attention and deliver the message concisely.
Understanding Your Audience
Another important aspect to consider when preparing a speech is the audience. It is crucial to tailor your speech based on the audience's education level, interests, and the subject matter being discussed. One should adjust their speech style accordingly, whether addressing a formal gathering like an IAS/IPS Officer conference or a more casual setting like an election meeting.
Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking
To overcome the fear of public speaking (F.E.A.R - False Evidence Appearing Real), it is recommended to seek permission from the organizer or chairperson before beginning your speech. Approach the stage with a smile, greet the audience (Good Morning Friends/Good Afternoon Comrades/Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen), and start with a light-hearted anecdote to engage the audience from the start. Capturing the audience's attention within the first 30 seconds of your speech is key to delivering a successful presentation.
I hope you find the above tips helpful. Let's also invite our knowledgeable members to share insights on the topic of public speaking.
