I am basically an HR professional in a private company located in Tiruppur. There are many issues between employers and employees regarding daily wages, absenteeism, attrition, etc.

Employees are not stable in a particular company; they switch to more than five companies in a week for money. Still, there is instability in the labor market. What is the solution?

Is your organization one of the ready-made garments manufacturers? Is the organization making all the payments to employees on time? Please provide the details in a more detailed manner.

How is it possible to switch over to more than 5 companies in a week? Approximately, how many organizations and workers are there in your area? How did you come to know that they are switching for money?

Try to understand the reasons using a questionnaire that covers the behavior of supervisors/line managers, preferred timings (if your organization appoints lady workers, some may prefer half-day work), availability of transportation facilities, working conditions, etc. Normally, reasons for absenteeism may include habits, lack of interest, troubles at home, dissatisfaction with the job, and transportation issues.

Then, explore both monetary and non-monetary motivation schemes.

There is a shortage of 2.5 lakh workers, and with newly started units increasing daily wages rapidly, it is ultimately affecting the larger companies.

The shortage of labor is causing various issues, with companies offering whatever the workers are looking for. As big companies, we cannot afford all demands, so wages are increasing day by day.

Manpower shortage is a general scenario nowadays in almost all industries. No employee sticks with one employer for even a month because they are choosy.

Please consider the following points:

1. Approach your neighboring orphanage centers and speak with the in-charge about your requirements. They will send you suitable candidates as per your needs from the orphanage.

2. There are many rehabilitation centers with skilled manpower seeking to offer their support.

By following this approach, I addressed the manpower shortage, retained employees, and highlighted this issue as part of our corporate social responsibility.

Give them the benefit of PF and ESI schemes. You can also provide incentives. Some schemes that can help their family may also be introduced.

You are clearly saying that there is a huge gap between demand and supply of manpower in your industry (garment and apparel).

I am feeling a bit happy that, at least there is one industry and one location in India where there is a serious shortage of manpower.

You are in a difficult situation. You are in a Sellers' Market, and the seller (labor) will dictate terms of his/her employment. He/She will demand more salary and more facilities, and in case you are not able to offer them, he/she will move to the next employer who is offering employment with better terms.

Under the given circumstances, you have no choice but to follow better employee practices than other employers to attract and retain quality manpower.
