Depends on which industry you are working in; if it's a manufacturing industry, definitely you need to. But there's nothing wrong in learning; it will always be helpful, maybe not today, but in the future.

Dear,

In my opinion, one must have knowledge of Labour Laws when working with the HR department. While preparing HR policies, we have to keep in mind the respective labor law if applicable for that particular subject.

Labour = Human, hence Law for Labour is Law of Human. Therefore, irrespective of the industry that you may work in, it is of utmost importance as an HR professional to keep yourself updated on Labour Laws.

This is not mandatory to have a formal degree or certification, but knowledge of employment laws and the government administration system is an advantage to becoming perfect and self-sufficient. I have not studied law, but I have read many laws and judgments. This has given me an advantage in being able to inform my advocate about the legal grounds on which we can file a petition, rather than relying solely on the lawyer to determine if the case is contestable or not contestable.

While I would also join the good advisors in saying yes, it's important. May I qualify this by adding that if you are not really looking to earn your bread & butter handling IR & Admin, then the best option perhaps is to find checklists (plenty of downloads on this site) for ensuring compliance and focus on what is required for compliance. An experienced industry person can also tell you which sections of which acts/rules are important from the compliance point of view. This would perhaps be better than trying to memorize entire bare acts. However, if you do decide to delve deep, go through case histories. It's a different and interesting world out there, which even the most law-averse person might grow to enjoy.

It's highly necessary to have a perfect knowledge of labor laws if you are an HR manager. I am a student of PMIR, so we have a special book in our syllabus on labor laws.

You asked in your post whether labor laws and administrative laws are important for an HR (assuming it is an HR department employee). If you are serious about the HR profession, you must definitely have expertise (not knowledge alone) in both areas. You must excel in labor laws and be exemplary in administrative laws. Therefore, ensure you study both subjects well.

Hi Shirish,

I believe every HR professional should have knowledge of the law because it is crucial when managing issues such as environmental laws, labor laws, patent laws, international trade laws, and business laws. In my opinion, understanding the law is essential for any HR professional.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I would also like to pursue a certificate/diploma course in Labour Laws. Can anybody suggest where it can be done?

Being an aspiring HR professional, one should have sound knowledge of labor laws applicable to the respective industry, whereas administration comes as the execution part in your career. Moreover, knowledge is best precipitated when stirred in action.
