If you were on unsanctioned leave then it will be considered as LWP only. Leaves are supposed to be pre-approved from from seniors.

If you have a leave balance and you go on an unplanned leave without applying for leave, then yes, it is considered as an LOP. It is better to apply than to go on an LOP.
