Hi, ma'am/sir,

I have a 7-year gap between my education and job. The reason is my father has health issues; he is a dialysis patient. I am the eldest person in my family, so the family burden is on me. However, my passion is IT. How can I answer for an HR interview if they ask about this gap? I am very thankful to you if you suggest to me.

In the 7 years, how have you kept up with changing technology and skills?

I understand and sympathize that you had to attend to your father, which you did as a dutiful son. If you have kept up with the latest technology in your field, then you could answer that though there is a gap, you kept abreast of your knowledge by doing --------. It is difficult, but you can try to convince employers of your skill level and highlight your other good qualities which will attract an employer.

All the best

As Nathrao said, in IT, skills matter first. Employers look to see if you have the necessary skills to deliver results for them. Have you not worked anywhere intermittently? No matter. If you update your skills, it will help you secure a job.

Thank you very much, NATHRAO.

As of now, I have learned new technologies. I have a good understanding of these technologies. However, I have struggled to explain what happened in my career. Nonetheless, this is the genuine reason, you know. I am uncertain about how to secure a job without addressing that question. I need to work to support my family. Everyone keeps asking the same question. Oh, such a significant gap! Why don't they understand? I possess a deep understanding of current technologies and have the capability to excel in a job. Which answer should I provide to them?

Hi, I think that is absolutely okay. You can always say that you attended to family duties and hence could not pursue an office-based role for 7 years. The employer should see what you are capable of doing and make an offer. All the best.

Stress your skills. Offer to demonstrate your skills practically. Even carry with you a program that you have never developed. I am sure some smart employer will see beyond the gap and appreciate your skills. Best of luck.
