I request you to advise me on the below-mentioned query. I am working in a small IT company, with a staff of nearly 50 people. It is not a private limited company but a Sole Proprietorship. I work as an HR, so my contribution in formulating policies remains at 40%, but the ultimate decision rests with our Management.
Change in Leave Policy
My query pertains to a change in the leave policy at the end of the year. Employees were provided with an Employee handbook at the beginning of the year, which stated that their Paid Leave (PL) would be carried forward for up to two years (this policy was in place before I joined the company). Now, I have been instructed to amend it so that PL will only be carried forward up to 50% of the total balance and to a maximum of 3 days. Any excess balance will be forfeited.
This change has been received very negatively, and personally, I believe it is unfair to the employees. I have expressed my concerns to the management, advising against implementing the change this year as it is ill-timed considering our previous commitments. However, they have not taken any action, and employees are voicing their complaints to me daily. I am attempting to persuade and explain the situation to them, but I seek your advice on whether I should support the employees and escalate the matter to management or remain silent and provide diplomatic responses to the employees. I fear that if I do not support the employees, it may lead to increased negativity among them.
