I am currently employed in a government undertaking company. I have completed my BE in Electrical Engineering and now wish to pursue my MBA. I am considering joining the Distance MBA program offered by IGNOU. During a discussion with my brother, he mentioned that Distance MBA programs are perceived to have lower value compared to full-time MBAs. Is this true? Can I still have good job prospects after completing a distance MBA from IGNOU?

Thank you.

Distance Learning and Online MBAs

Distance learning and online MBAs do not have the same standing as full-time MBAs, but they are less expensive and also enable you to gain experience. Please click on the links in the sidebar on the right; this issue has been covered more than adequately in those links.

I accept that distance study has less value than regular and full-time study, but it is still more valuable for candidates who are working professionals and willing to continue their studies or attain higher education.

Second, Mr. Jamesdbrma, I would like to say that it depends on you, how much time you can spare for your study and put your effort into this regard. Do not forget, hard work always pays off, no matter the context.

There are a number of people who have studied correspondently and are well-established in the market today, and many of them are top professionals in the industry. You can achieve the same if you have a strong interest and are ready to put forward your sincere effort.

On the same topic (Correspondence Study), I have also discussed with many members, seniors, and experts in the past, and again today, I want to convey that one must have a positive thinking and approach with it. We can't deny the value of full-time study, but students or candidates who are working and studying correspondence, it should be noted, are more efficient and able to take a good position in the market due to their practical knowledge, understanding, and experience.

Mr. Jamesdbrma, I would suggest you please go ahead and study hard. Please do not allow negative thinking or responses to affect your decision.

Everyone has different experiences, perceptions, and knowledge, and if correspondence study has no value, then why is it being offered by all universities? Even the world's top-ranking universities are offering it. Why? You need to understand this and step ahead.

In short, enroll yourself and start your study

Best of luck.

I think one of the most basic things all of us are missing is that James is already working in a government organization. One more thing which James has not clarified is if he is looking for the option of leaving his government job and joining the private sector immediately after completing his MBA.

One might ask, how does it make a difference?

In a government organization, if he obtains approval from his department for pursuing an MBA in Distance education or full-time (only from AICTE or UGC approved Institute), he will be able to claim increment/promotion benefits.

If he is planning to shift immediately to the private sector, the total weightage will be based on his past experience and the kind of job profiles he has handled. He will not benefit from the MBA and will be considered a fresher with some industrial exposure.

However, if he continues with his current organization for some period, handling roles and responsibilities, after some years, his MBA will definitely give him better value regardless of it being Distance or Full-time.

Opportunities for Experienced Professionals

I would also like to bring to all my friends' notice that some reputed institutes offer degrees like Executive MBA or PGDM (equivalent to MBA) for experienced professionals in part-time, providing heavy placement packages in reputed private sector corporations upon completion of the course.

It is up to Mr. James to decide what his goal is and what he wants to achieve after completing his MBA.

I have gone through the valuable suggestions given by the respected member. I would like to add that doing a course using any method is important, but what truly matters is the depth of knowledge and command over the subject. People come to me for interviews with various degrees, but I often find that they have merely passed examinations and have little understanding of the subject.

Indu

As long as the college or university has the appropriate accreditation, there should be no difference whether you obtain the MBA through on-campus, online, or distance learning. But make sure the institution has regional accreditation. With regional accreditation, you can be assured the coursework and degree you complete will be recognized by all other colleges and universities as well as employers.
