How important it is to maintain Work-Life Balance?

Hi......

Hope you find your answer in this speech of Chetan Bhagat, which he gave in IIM-A

“Don’t

just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced,

successful life.

I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means

ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.

There

is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your

breakup.

There

is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts.

Shopping

is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.

Life

is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in

a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming

first.

Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your

striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life.

Else, you may

achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive,

will start to die.

One

thing about nurturing the spark – don’t take life seriously.

Life is not meant

to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid

card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And

50 years is just 2,500 weekends.

Do we really need to get so worked up?

It’s

ok, bunk a few classes…

Scoring low in couple of papers…

Goof up a few

interviews…

Take leave from work…

Fall in love…

Little fights with your spouse…

We are people, not programmed devices…!”

“Don’t be serious, be sincere!”

‘Live today like there is no tomorrow…’

Have a beautiful life…

True. I agree.

I would like to add that one needs to give 100% effort while performing any task. It can be a presentation for the client, cleaning the kitchen after cooking, or playing the game of Counter-Strike. I would say it's a "life-life" balance. Another important aspect is to think in compartments. I try not to take the office work back home nor bring home tensions into the office. It is not easy and can go completely haywire at times, but that's the beauty of "balance." One tends to tip more at one end initially and then weighs the options to make it equal. Happy balancing.

Dear friend,

Understand the difference between working on your life and spending life on work. Balance is the basic rule of nature. So be natural, as "forlearning" said above, don't carry tensions from or to your home... sweet home.

Well, 300184veena has really explained it nicely.

Live your life like a hobby. Have a Beautiful... Meaningful... Significant Life.

Dear All,

Very good views from all. However, sometimes we get carried away by tensions. In one of the training programs, one of the participants asked me about hazards arising from mental situations. This is relative. Even a child who is studying in the first standard has a lot of tension to complete homework. We are all used to such situations in our day-to-day life.

It is necessary for all of us to improve the quality of life by adopting good food habits, exercises (such as walking, working out, swimming, cycling, and YOGA). I have been practicing yoga for quite a long time. Attached is one file containing YOGAs.

Thank you, Sudhir, for the extensive information on Yoga. Continuing with the work-life balance topic, I would like to add that simple things are the most difficult to achieve. When we look at a task objectively, it becomes much easier to work on it. Taking the example of the child in the first standard from Sudhir's example above, if the child is made to realize the importance of homework as a task and the benefits that come in the form of better knowledge (and not materialistic items like an ice cream treat or chocolates, etc.), then one instills a very good quality of focus in that child for the long run. The child would not feel stressed to complete the homework but would look forward to finishing it with a lot of enthusiasm.

Similarly, we too need to focus on things, probably one thing at a time. Balance would also mean removing non-value-add tasks from our list or delegating them.

Team,

Mr. Sudhir and Nivetha provided good documents on the above-mentioned topic. When I went through this topic, it reminded me of a Work-Life-Balance presentation I have. I found it in my collection and have attached it for your review.

Hope this helps.

Keep on sharing.

Respected professional,

Identify five professionals with more than 10 years of working experience in your social network. Ask them about the challenges they face in balancing their work and life. Then, identify common points and start adapting them one by one. Remember, you can learn from experienced friends. Keep smiling and be cheerful.
