Mahesh,
In your first post in this thread, you used the words "Hope this would be of little use...". I think what you wanted to convey was "Hope this would be of SOME use...". Little use means NO use at all.
As far as IM is concerned, all of us should use the techniques only if we have substance in us. Otherwise, people will see through us in the long run. Good work always gets recognized, but sometimes it may take time. IM only lets you speed up that process of getting that recognition faster.

Hi,
Sorry to disappoint you; however, talking of "Impression Management"... I couldn't agree with it.
A) It's easier to create a great impression, but it's difficult to live it all along. Do not set unrealistic expectations.
B) It's better to be assertive than to be deceptive. You may be successful with your dealings where you just want to create a great first impression (ref: MAGIC, Making A Great Impression on your Customer). However, that's for sales guys.
To be "effective," you need to be dynamic and honest and set realistic expectations during all your interactions, be it the first or the last. The point is, do you want to be successful or effective? Success is just a milestone (short-term); to be effective is an amalgamation of all actions included and its impact on people's perception about you (long-term). So you have a choice...
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mahesh,
My designation is Manager of Human Resources. However, what is truly happening in my office is going madly, deeply. I am listening to all of this in silence because everyone here seems to be more focused on Impression Management rather than striving to become role models or leaders in their respective functional areas. It's been a very interesting experience for me.

Dear Mahesh,
Your PPT on IM was thoughtful and practical, especially for persons who are talented but do not know how to show it. This presentation will be of great help for beginners; also, it will be a refresher for thorough professionals. Keep up the good work.
In your post, you have mentioned 'of little use' which means 'of no use'.

It's funny this came up. We have a new site manager who has never been a manager of a plant. This would be a good presentation to forward to her to help her through her journey. As we all know, there are so many different personalities we all have to deal with. Something like this could help her perform in a positive way.
Thanks for your positive info and sharing.

This is indeed a very good presentation and useful. However, as you know, the first impression is the last impression, and it is very difficult to change perception later. Does anybody have any materials on how to change an old bad impression to a good one? Due to some issues, my first impression to one of my bosses was not good, and I am not able to change my image now even after a lot of hard work. If anybody has suggestions or any theoretical materials, please share.
