It is a year-on-year exercise for companies to give out gifts during the Christmas season. As we are facing a recession this year, do you think it's okay to skip it altogether? I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

The practice of giving Christmas gifts to employees is good. It is a way of sharing the employer's happiness with the employees. If the employees are aware of this fact, then there is no problem in not giving gifts this time due to reasons beyond the control of an independent employer like yours. However, do you think that employees actually think like this? I have come across employees who seldom consider the employer's perspective. They are concerned only about what they should receive. Since then, I have adopted the practice of not offering anything that is not provided for in the labor Acts as mandatory. If any employer, out of affection or otherwise, gives any gift to employees, the same will become an expectation for them. Remember, "privileges become rights."

Gifts mean a lot to anybody as they are the only way to show your love and respect towards your employees. So cutting down on gifts because of a recession will show that you only mean business and nothing else. This obviously would be a bad sign as your employees would lose confidence in you. So try to keep them happy and help yourself with their cooperation.

I guess the practice these days is that employers will take a thousand steps forward for that one step for the employee. At the end of it, this is what the market has created. During boom times, when the salaries are skyrocketing, the employee is king. But come a recession, it is the employer who has the last laugh. I am still for rewarding employees, but appreciating some while instilling envy in others will create an imbalance and division among your workforce.

I cast my vote on what Sunil said, that envy could actually imbalance and divide the workforce. It is the employer who is responsible for any m ade in the company. So a gift will ignite confidence in all the employees to work better. Due to the ongoing economic crisis, you can opt for gifts with discounted rate.

Gifting out something like an electronic gadget or an Ipod even during such difficult times is sure to be appreciated by employees and would go a long way.
What about department store gift vouchers? They are good because your subordinates get to choose their own preferred gifts. If you think the gift is a little too impersonal, then add a little Christmas card along with the gift voucher.
Christmas is a good time to say a couple of nice words. Thank each subordinate for their hard work and let each individual know what his/her strengths and contributions to the company are.

I did consider that, but a thing like that would come across as 'doing it for the sake of doing practice'. I want to do something that will create a sort of a memory stamp that will remind them that they are fully appreciated and something as significant was received.

I totally agree with you, Sunil. Many a time, companies give out gifts which are done more to check it off their to-do list for the year rather than meaningful gifting. I had an instance where I got a traveling bag from the company with a fancy design and the company logo. I just had to transport it from the office to home when one of the wheels broke off! So, gifting something with quality and purpose rather than saving a penny on quality will make a world of difference and avoid that backlash.

iPods would be an ideal gift this Christmas, rather than settling for stereotypical traditional gifts like keychains, photo frames, mugs, shopping coupons, etc.
Even during this hard time of recession, companies can opt for the 1GB iPod Shuffle, which comes at an affordable price tag of Rs. 2300. Although there is no hard and fast rule about Christmas gifting for employees, still, it should happen to retain the motivational factor among them. A small gift like this will help in achieving that. Moreover, it stands out as a sleek, cool gadget which, besides music, acts as a great stress buster.

I do agree with Sam on that motivational point. It is very important to reward your top employees with something that they value. An iPod is a good gift that anyone can use anywhere, and everyone is going to love it as everyone likes music. The link looks really superb. The iPod has its own class separate from the rest of the music players in its class. Thanks for the link, which has turned out to be a good one.

Corporate gifting is important in a lot of ways. Without it, there will be a lot of gaps to be filled between employees and the company, as well as clients and the company. Thus, Christmas gifts also fall into this category. People are talking about gifting iPods and other items. It's better to gift something rather than nothing to people who work around it.

Dear Sunil,
It's fine that you skip the gifts. I am sure employees are mature enough to understand the company's position. They will be happy that they are on the job. However, you can conduct some activities or an employee engagement program internally so at least they all can enjoy. This doesn't cost anything.

With the recession spreading its dark roots to every part of the world, every employee seems to sink into a cloud of tensions. A gift would prove to be a ray of hope for all the employees, and it would boost the motivational factor. You can opt for some latest gadgets like an iPod or go with the traditional practice of gifting chocolates.
