Dear Friends,

It is good to learn SAP and even work on this ERP package. However, I would like to address a hard reality in the SAP job market.

My views are not intended to discourage SAP aspirants. This is a small effort on my part to make you aware of SAP market trends.

SAP has slowed down, and it is not as lucrative as it was before.

- The trend has changed, as most of the big and medium-scale industries have already implemented SAP.
- There are numerous companies involved in SAP implementation, causing the market price to decrease.
- SAP itself has acknowledged that it is now primarily focused on the Small and Medium sector.
- Salaries that were offered in the early 2005 were three to four times higher than what companies are offering SAP entrants today.

This is the current scenario in the SAP market.

As an experienced HR Professional, what challenges would you face upon joining SAP?

- You would need to start from scratch, similar to a fresher joining from college or school.
- You may receive a comparatively lower salary.
- Lower designation leading to decreased responsibility and authority.
- Engaging in routine, monotonous tasks, often working in one place.
- Limited growth opportunities only within the ERP sector and facing intense competition compared to HR generalists.

Advantages of choosing a career in SAP:

- Entry into the software realm and potential transition to technical roles.
- Opportunities to work in renowned MNCs.
- Status and association with a prestigious brand.
- Exposure to a good corporate culture and the software industry.
- Experts may receive a significant salary hike ranging from 30-50%.
- Chance for foreign assignments.

Disadvantages of pursuing a career in SAP:

- Losing the knowledge-intensive aspect of the job.
- Transitioning from a broad scope of knowledge, work profiles, and job opportunities to a limited area.
- Reduction in remuneration and benefits: Salaries in core HR Generalist roles are often higher than those in tech, even in SAP.
- Loss of benefits and perks: Typically, in SAP careers, individuals with 3-5 years of experience may not receive the same benefits as core HR personnel at the junior management level.
- Decrease in authority, responsibility, and involvement in employee relations.

I hope this information will be helpful to all SAP aspirants.

Thanks,
siddu

I really appreciate the comparisons between SAP and HR generalist. However, it is the market requirement that one should possess the skills. SAP is a good option for those who are good at technical aspects, while people who enjoy interacting should consider working as a generalist. Therefore, it really depends on the likes and dislikes of the individual. For those not happy with SAP, there is also the option to switch to a generalist role.
