Dear All,
Can anyone tell me how to calculate the Quarterly Performance Index of an employee in the Point rating method of Performance Appraisal? What will be the formula and how to analyze it? I am short on time; hence, I would appreciate it if someone could help me ASAP.

Hi,
First, you have to decide on the rating factors (hope you have done it!) then decide whether you want to follow a 5-point rating or a 10-point rating scale (0-5 or 0-10). Then decide the range for Excellent, Good, Fair, Average, and Poor. For example, in a 10-point rating system, you may follow as below:
1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest
1-3: Poor
3.5-5: Fair
5.5-7: Good
7.5-10: Excellent
Let us assume that you have 10 traits to measure. In this case, what you have to do is assign the weightage in terms of % of consideration to each trait so that you value certain critical traits that would contribute to the overall rating of the employee. Then you have to calculate the final rating.
Calculation (Considering all the below traits will sum up to 100%):
Trait a: 10%
Trait b: 25%
Trait c: 40%
...
X%
Y%
...
Trait J (10th trait): Z%
Hope this is clear to you.
(Dear Forum colleagues, if you have any suggestions, you may please add here)

Hi Karanik,
I have no experience in all of this. This is the first time I am handling it. The fixed rating scale is 1-5 for this method. After every quarter, a performance appraisal cycle will run, meaning there would be 4 cycles in a year.
After every quarter, the Quarterly Performance Index has to be calculated. Similarly, after a year, the Annual Performance Index would be calculated. Salary appraisal will be done based on the 4 Quarterly Performance Index.
The Quarterly performance index result will be an input to the Annual Performance index. Please let me know the formula for calculating them all.

Hi Karanik,
Your information was useful. Thank you. Can you please tell me how we should proceed after going through the process mentioned and arriving at the final scores? I mean, once we have calculated the scores, how do we decide who is to be paid how much, who needs training, who needs career growth, etc.? There must be a bar scale to finally classify the people, isn't it? Please help me with this.
