Social Security Number (SSN) - Key to Your Social Security
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has launched a significant project called "Re-Inventing EPF India" to provide world-class service to all its clients. This project includes the allotment of a unique identity number known as the Social Security Number (SSN) to every Provident Fund subscriber. The SSN is a unique 14-digit identification number. Information about the subscriber is collected using prescribed SSN forms along with their photograph. These forms are provided free of cost by the Provident Fund Office.
The SSN is compulsory for every Provident Fund subscriber in the new system to provide all types of services. The Provident Fund Office will soon set up a camp in your establishment or nearby area for data collection for the allotment of the SSN. Please contact your employer or the Provident Fund Office for assistance in filling out the forms to get your SSN.
WHY DO I NEED IT? THE BENEFITS OF HAVING AN SSN
After being allocated an SSN, you will have one unique number for life, including for your pension after retirement. You will have access to facilities anywhere and anytime when all the offices of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation are eventually linked together electronically in a phased manner. You will no longer need to transfer your Provident Fund accumulations every time you change employment or move from one place to another. Your Provident Fund account will be updated monthly instead of the current annual updates. Eventually, when the necessary infrastructure is in place, you can check your Provident Fund balance over the phone (IVRS), through the internet, or through specially set up interactive kiosks.
Please ensure you provide all information about yourself in the SSN Form correctly and completely. Kindly cooperate with the EPF team when they visit your establishment or a nearby camp for capturing photographs and data.
REMEMBER! THE SSN IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL PF MEMBERS
PROCEDURE FOR THE ALLOTMENT OF THE SSN
The procedure for the allotment of the SSN is as follows:
- The employer must fill out a unique SSN form for each of his employees. This form is provided free of cost by the EPFO field office.
- For the allotment of the SSN, the data will be captured either through a Camp (if a large number of employees are available in one establishment), in the premises of the establishment itself, or filled in forms with a pasted photo.
- The employer or manager of the establishment should arrange the date and venue of the Camp in consultation with the local EPF Officer In charge of SSN. This ensures maximum employee attendance.
- Forms should be filled after reading and understanding the form filling instructions. If required, seek help from the form filling enumerators accompanying the data collection teams.
- The employer will be aided in filling up the forms by a team of data collection vendors accompanying the local EPF official. These are termed as ECRs (EPF Camp Representatives).
- Data from the filled forms of each individual and digital photos of the member will be captured in the Camp by a joint team of the local EPF Office and data collection vendor.
- The details provided in the forms will be verified and signed by the employer for authenticity and accuracy.
- Employees who could not attend a camp can join another nearby camp. If some members still cannot visit the camps, they can paste a passport size photograph (preferably colored) and submit the same at the local field office of EPFO (Sub Regional Office, Regional Office).
- Once data has been collected, a communication regarding the number allotted to each employee will be sent to the employers, who will then communicate the number to the respective individual.
- All new employees will fill the forms with a pasted photo and submit the same to EPFO. Alternatively, they can visit the local EPF Office to get their details captured in the permanent Camp.
